Rookop is a brown, top-fermented ale formerly brewed by the St.-Joris brewery in the village of Reningelst until 1963. We were asked to bring the most famous beer of this former brewery back to life and made it a dubbel-style ale brewed with Admiral and Golding hops, fruity and sweet with some chocolate notes.
Our Rookop was brewed for the first time on May 5, 2012.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours a very dark ruby/brown colour with a thinnish beige head. Aromas of dry dark fruits, caramel, chocolate, berries, brown bread and a little brown sugar. Taste is more dark fruits, caramel, chocolate with added roasty and nutty notes. Lightish body with light fizz on the palate and a fairly long dark fruity and sweet chocolate finish. Not bad.

33cl Bottle at het Pandje, Zaandam. Brown colour, beige head. Aroma of sweet nutty malt, caramel, toffee. Flavour is sweet, toffee, light nutty, malty sweet finish. Light bodied. Beer without hops, made by a hop farm... Boring stuff.

Bottle pour at the brewery. Medium to dark brown with reddish tints. Really ch chocolate nose, herbal, earthy hops. Rich chocolate malt, not sweet, earthy, some raisin, rather light and crisp. Not a dubbel, lighter and drier. Good stuff.

Bottle from a Carrefour in Ninove. Pours hazy dark brown, reddish, with a small, foamy, tan head; little lacing; some floaties. Aroma of raisin, almond, berries, herbs, apple, plum, cake, 'carré confiture', faint caramel. Medium fruity sweet onset, plum, raisin & cake, complemented by a light herbal bitterness, slightly grassy & toasty; notes of dough & almond in the back. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, nutty & fruity, lingering dough. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Pleasant surprise!
