500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. ABV is 4.0%. Pitch black colour, large brown head. Aroma of cocoa and coffee, hints of tar, wood and leather. Creamy mouthfeel. The flavour is dominated by cocoa / chocolate, also notes of coffee, brown bread and burnt caramel, a little fruit too. Pretty good.

500 ml sampled in 2008. Black body with a medium sized, dense, brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and some fruit. Flavor has sweet malt, mild chokolae, coffee and light bitterness. Thin body and a bit short in aftertaste. A bit disappointing actually.

500ml bottle @ vPBF
Pours dark brown, almost black. Aroma of roasty malts, some berries, hints of vanilla. Smooth and roasty taste with notes of vanilla, chocolate and hints of coffee and berries. Finish is smoothy and slightly roasty. Decent, quite easy to drink.

50 cl bottle @ vPBF, BBE 08/2008
Aroma is somewhat sweet with cocoa and milk chocolate. Somewhat watery palate. Flavour is somewhat bitter in a harsh way. It has some milk chocolate and cocoa. What a surprise! This does not feel aged or contaminated at all and actually this tastes quite the same it did in 2009.

April 2007: Brown 500ml bottle, purple label, can’t find a best before date on the bottle. Poured into a Frankenheim Alt glass twice. If there is a darker beer out there, I haven’t seen it, dense and black, with a small bubbled rich light brown foaming head. Very strong burnt malt aroma, dark chocolate and treacle smells add to the malt, which gives the beer an over cooked chocolate cake aroma. This beer is what it claims it is, a smooth and creamy Chocolate Stout. This is what lets the beer down a little, it is watery for such a heavy looking and smelling stout. I enjoyed this beer, a pity about the mouthfeel, but drank with some Belgian chocolates made with beer (as bought at the Zythos fest), which I did with the second bottle, it stood up very well.

Courtesy of CigarCityBrew. First US based rating of this beer.
Pours dark with brown edges and light brown head. In the aroma I get moderately roasted malts moving to burnt and some ash sprinkled on bread. Yummy aroma really. Nice nearly creamy mouthfeel bringing in roasted to burnt malts with some chocolate building and building into the finish. In closing the burnt malts rise up to a mild level from the finish and into the after taste. Very satisfying.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor is sweet and very roasted combined with notes of bitter chocolate and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish. The body is thin, which is the only drawback.

Bottle. Pouring this beer, you see the definition on how a stout should look like, black as can be, and with a beautiful tan head on top. Pity the rest of the beer isn’t in the same league. Far from being bad though. The nose has cocoa, chocolate and coffee, while the flavor is dominated by coffee, leaving the chocolate in the background. Medium to thin body, but considering the 4% ABV, that’s ok. It finishes with a lasting flavor of coffee. Quite dry. I think the beer focuses too much on the coffee, considering they call it chocolate stout, but it’s nice and drinkable anyway. (080314)
