Chocolate Duchesse Cherry“ is as its name suggests a chocolate and cherry beer. This beer is an ode to Belgian know-how. We are known and recognized for our delicious beers and exquisite chocolates. We had the crazy idea of mixing the two and making them a unique product.
Brewed only with real Belgian cherries (no flavor enhancers or cherry extracts). The fruit comes from the region of Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium).
The base beer of the “Chocolate Duchesse Cherry“ is a red-brown from West Flanders with mixed fermentation. This beer has a high fermentation base and is then matured in oak casks where it undergoes a second wild fermentation. The tannins in the casks (very large barrel used for the storage of great Bordeaux wines) give Chocolate Duchesse Cherry its sweet, fruity, refreshing and bittersweet taste.
Once the base beer is ready, the master brewer adds 20 Kg of "Kriek Gorsem" (Belgian sour cherries) per 100 liters to the beer. For 6 months, the beer macerates with the cherries. The cherries give a fresh and fruity taste to the beer which has a sweet and sour base. After, we add cocoa to the beer which will soften (without going overboard) the beer and give it a chocolate aftertaste. the total process take 24 months.

Nothing but cherries at fridge temperature, fine, but prefer the ordinary. Eventually, chocolate comes through when it warms, but a bit chalky at that point

Draft pour at Mekong, Richmond VA. Poured a dark ruby color, brown hues, with a small off-white head. Aroma was sour cherry, with some light spices. Aroma was like the regular Duchesse, sour cherries, tangy aroma. Flavor was big Black Forest German Chocolate Cake. Flavor had only a little tartness. Overall, this was pretty pleasant. Thought it might be a complete disaster.

0.33 l bottle at Valhalla Craft Beer Bar, Zagreb. Deep ruby red to purple, small pinkish head. Aroma is dark cherry, cherry candy, some cocoa. Nice sour cherry flavour, some sweetness in a juice-like manner. High carbonation. Some oak, some cocoa. Moderate to high sourness. A touch of glue, funk and gummy bears. Moderate finish, puckering, lingering.

Brownish red. Aroma is sour cherry toffee berry marmelade sweet malty base some hazelnut light funky notes. Taste is very sweet cherry with some residual brown sugar and decent fresh berry sourness. Drinkable. A bit heavier. Finish of cocoa and cherries with sweet malt. A bit too sweet for my taste. Alright.

Bottle, 0.33l. Deep ruby pour, half finger soapy off-white head, short lasting. Minimal lacing on the glass. Nice on the nose, cherries and chocolate, cake and candy. Medium body, average carbonation. Soft and smooth mouthfeel and texture, chewy, mild sticky. Moderately sour taste balanced with mild sweetness in the background. Aroma of cherries, molasses, chocolate. Caramel, mild tart, subtly acidic. Medium lasting finish, dry and tart. Very good.

Keg at Mikey's in Plover, 11/27/21. Hazy dark red, thin frothy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of chocolate, raisin, vinegar, cherry. Taste is tart cherry, balsamic, chocolate, caramel. The chocolate really detracts from this beer. Good concept but it doesn't work. Slick, palate coating.
