Chocolate Duchesse Cherry“ is as its name suggests a chocolate and cherry beer. This beer is an ode to Belgian know-how. We are known and recognized for our delicious beers and exquisite chocolates. We had the crazy idea of mixing the two and making them a unique product.
Brewed only with real Belgian cherries (no flavor enhancers or cherry extracts). The fruit comes from the region of Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium).
The base beer of the “Chocolate Duchesse Cherry“ is a red-brown from West Flanders with mixed fermentation. This beer has a high fermentation base and is then matured in oak casks where it undergoes a second wild fermentation. The tannins in the casks (very large barrel used for the storage of great Bordeaux wines) give Chocolate Duchesse Cherry its sweet, fruity, refreshing and bittersweet taste.
Once the base beer is ready, the master brewer adds 20 Kg of "Kriek Gorsem" (Belgian sour cherries) per 100 liters to the beer. For 6 months, the beer macerates with the cherries. The cherries give a fresh and fruity taste to the beer which has a sweet and sour base. After, we add cocoa to the beer which will soften (without going overboard) the beer and give it a chocolate aftertaste. the total process take 24 months.

Bottle from Beer Merchants. It pours clear deep ruby with a quicly disipaiting fizzy off-white head. The aroma has some pleasing chocolate upfront, more cacao nibs than cheap milk chocolate, tangy red fruits, cherry, black forest gateaux vibes, but also rather vinous and red wine. The taste is dry, tart, tangy, very vinous, red wine, nip of acidity, strawberry with balsamic vinegar, tangy cherry, cherry cola, cacao nib and dyr oak with a tangy red fruit finish. Medium body and fine, fizzy carbonation. Works so much better than expected. I am a fancof the base beer and had worried about some very artificial adjunct addition... but it didn't come into fruition. Nice one!

330 ml bottle. Brief beige head. Yeasty, earthy cherry aroma has notes of cocoa. Tangy sweet cherry flavor upfront. Notes of cocoa and earthy funk. Some booziness in middle. Sourness remains throughout.

Ruby beer, thin lively head. Smells mostly of sharp cherry but has a little chocolate too. Flavour matches that. Tart, sweet cherry up front but there is a bit of distinct malty chocolate underneath it as well. Works really well and this is super drinkable.

Bottle. Deep red tints in dark brown. Thick, low head. Nose is decidedly chocolate or cocoa powder, and cherry, with lactic acid, yogurt, vanilla. Very sweet, lots of dark chocolate, lots of cherry, tart. Rather dessert-like but not simple or too silly. Quite nice. Less gimmicky than expected.
