Launched in 1927 by Colonel Jim Porter after three years of development, the 1960 merger of Newcastle Breweries with Scottish Brewers afforded the beer national distribution and sales peaked in the United Kingdom during the early 1970s. The brand underwent a resurgence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. By the late 1990s, the beer was the most widely distributed alcoholic product in the UK. Brewing moved in 2005 from Newcastle to Dunston, Tyne and Wear and in 2010 to John Smiths Brewery in Tadcaster.

Draught. Brown with a reddish tint, small creamy beige head, faint caramel aroma, low carbonation, slightly sweet caramel taste, full body, balanced medium bitter finish. Very smooth as expected.

Color is something in between Coke and Nestea: reddish brown. Short-lived thin head. Aroma is caramel, vanilla and tea leaves. Light, watery, soft. Ends with some bitterness and a sweet hint.

440 ml can into pint glass, canned on 1/31/2014. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy ruby red/brownish color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, toast, brown bread, light nuttiness, light plum/apple, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Okay aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and light earthy hops/fruity yeast ester notes; with poor strength. Taste of caramel, brown sugar, toast, brown bread, light nuttiness, light plum/apple, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Minimal herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Good balance, complexity, and solid robustness of dark/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Fair amount of dryness after the finish as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.7%. Overall this is a solid Northern English brown ale style. All around good balance, complexity, and solid robustness of dark/bready malt and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A pleasantly enjoyable offering.

Bottle from Spar. Aroma toasted, fruity, dried fruits. Clear ruby-brown colour. Rather quickly disappearing head. Taste is bearing skunky notes of lightstruck which show despite the otherwise rich malty flavour. Toasted, dried fruits. Somewhat syrupy and raw. Lightstruck mostly in finish. Very thin bodied. Not bad, not exactly great either. Average.

Bottle shared at home. I canโt say I liked it. Pours dark amber light to medium body, small diminishing off-white head, caramel aromas, nuts, maybe toffee, not distinctive presence of hops, watery, slightly sweet, bitter finish. Not at all complex, nothing to reveal, indifferent and totally artificial. Neeeext!
