Appearance: Opaque brown. Huge, beige head. Taste: Medium sweet, fruity, dark malts, light spicy. Palate: Medium body. Sweet finish. Overall: Quite sweet. Nothing special.

Beautiful appearance of amber colour with ruby notes and huge, creamy beige-ish off-white head; aroma of grains, some grape, berries and floral notes; taste of roastedness, caramel notes, dried fruits, and some sourness; not a tylical saison, but surprisingly good

Bottle from Seiyu (¥150). Pours a caramel brown color with a modest off-white head that dissipates fairly quickly. Faint aromas of grain, hay, caramel malt and muscat. Sweet and slightly sour (in a rotten fruit way) on the palate. Light to medium body with a cola mouthfeel. Soft to average carbonation. Fruit flavors come a little more forward as it comes to room temperature: stone fruit, raisin, prune, muscat. Finish has a nutmeg and clove element to it. Not really a saison in the modern sense, but historically saison is an open category so this brown fits in fine.

Classic but ’deviant’ saison, in existence for seventy-odd years or so, proving the term ’saison’ could encompass more different beers than we now associate with it - and therefore interesting from a Belgian beer history perspective. Historically speaking, this fits the saison category perfectly for the simple reason saison could be most any kind of ’seasonal farmer’s beer’ back then. This one colours a deep bronze, misty, under a creamy and dense, yellowish white head; malty and estery nose, grapes, hazelnuts, overripe peach, banana, honey... Sweet and fruity taste on a soft, ’fluffy’ malt backbone, slightly nutty, a bit honeyish, yeasty with some lingering candi syrup sweetness, spicy notes and drying herbal hop bitterish finish with slight sourish touch. Unusual but ’honest’ and very enjoyable, I still regard this as one of Belgium’s classic beers, certainly from a historical viewpoint.
