Hertog Jan Karakter is a true Dutch ale, made from the special Hertog Jan malts. Hertog Jan malts, a carefully selected prestige malt, consists of four different malts. This gives the beer a fruity taste with adult hits of bitter. Besides this, Hertog Jan Karakter has the full and warm color of copper.

Karakter? No character at al. Chemical sweetness. Smokey malt, caramel. Also metallic. Medium carbonation.

Pours yellow-golden with thin white head. Aroma is fruity, malts with a little alcohol. Carbonation-wise it’s a bit too flat.

Jan 2008: The third and final offering of my ’Dutch Beer Afternoon’ on a wet and windy Saturday in Shropshire. Poured into my Corsendonk tulip glass. Red/brown in colour, the head just flew before I could even see it, I like my beer to have a head. Sweet aroma, caramel and toffee apples. The taste is fairly sweet, like the aroma. Sourness in there somewhere too. The sweetness hides the alcohol very well, but it does appear more in the mouth as the flavours begin to die away. I enjoyed this beer, the best of my three from this brewery I reviewed today, even though the scores are very close. Pity about the head.

30cl bottle bought in Venlo. Golden amber with a stiff cream head and very fine carbonation; somewhat spicy aroma; the body is rich and buttery with a light malty taste; the finish is dry and herbal leaving a sticky feeling in the mouth. Certainly characterful by Dutch standards.

Clear dark amber colored beer, nice color. Quite ’thin’ texture. Little bit sweet, little hop. Nice carbo and good body.

Colour was very nice. Definitly lacking in the smell department. Taste is very nice, but the mouthfeel has too much big CO2 bubbles.

33cl bottle from a friend. Almost no carbonation. Amber colour. A nice beer. I will have to re-rate it when it’s got a decent head.

Bottle in my hotel room, Amsterdam. Clear darkish amber beer, residual white head. Light and thin palate, quite ephemeral! Sweetish malt, tiny bit of stagnant hop. Dry finish and with a saccharin sweet aftertaste. Not quite as bad as I have made it sound but really not great.

Bottle. Medium amber color with lace. Slightly fruity aroma or amber malts, caramel, earth. Spicy, caramel flavor, some minerals, dried fruit, earthy hops. Residual molasses as well. OK. a rather average Belgian amber.
