Hertog Jan Karakter is a true Dutch ale, made from the special Hertog Jan malts. Hertog Jan malts, a carefully selected prestige malt, consists of four different malts. This gives the beer a fruity taste with adult hits of bitter. Besides this, Hertog Jan Karakter has the full and warm color of copper.

Bottle from the Deen market in Volendam. Pours reddish copper with a decent off-white head. Mild herbal/fruity aroma. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Flavor is caramel with mixed herbs and spices. A rather mild flavored beer for the style. Finishes a little bitter. It’s a drinkable beer, but not one I’d seek out.

300 ml bottle. Amber body with a thick, creamy off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malt, caramel, a bit metallic and a harsh bitterness with alcohol. I find this beer a bit out of balance with a such a clear alcoholic flavor and the bitterness is not particular nice.

bottle - Pours golden brown with a thin, fizzy head and a yeasty aroma. The flavor is sweet and yeasty with some mild hops bitterness in a slightly dry finish. It’s medium bodied and there’s a little alcohol noticeable.

Bottle, from trade with jbrus. It pours a clear, amber body, topped by a minimal off-white head. Dried apricots, some spicy notes, sugars, fresh fruits, a little tea like note and some bread. Sweet, medium to full bodied and maybe a little low on carbonation. Some alcohol warmth too. Sugars, dried apricots, some spicyness and a bready touch in the flavor. Dried apricots and sugar dominates the finish, but some alcohol and bitterness blend in. I’m not sure about this one. It’s a quite good one, but it’s a bit bland, if I can use such a word on a beer like this. It’s like a pale lager compared to a czech pilsner, where this one measures against a Chimay Bleu. (090414)

Bottle: Clear, amber coloured, small white foamy layer; sweet fruity-malty nose with a bready and a light roast-malty touch; moderate sweetish-bitter finish, medium to full bodied; a warming touch of alcohol in the fruity and malty-caramelly finish. Has got - no doubt - some character.....

30 cL bottle. Pours clear and golden orange with a dense and creamy light tan head. Aroma is somewhat metallic and yeasty aroma. Wheaty dense banana fruity flavoured. Sweet malty and somewhat caramelish yet does let go of the dominant estery wheat fruity notes. Ends somewhat dry. Im not getting this at all.
