Hertog Jan Karakter is a true Dutch ale, made from the special Hertog Jan malts. Hertog Jan malts, a carefully selected prestige malt, consists of four different malts. This gives the beer a fruity taste with adult hits of bitter. Besides this, Hertog Jan Karakter has the full and warm color of copper.

A nice red amber ale with a thin white head. A clean caramel aroma, unpretentious. In mouth a light sweet malt with a little curacao, very thin. A summer beer...not a lot of Karakter....Bought in a Dutch supermarket, and tasted in Nov. 2006.

Bottled(300ml). -Clear amber coloured, small off-white head, dusty wheaty nose with notes of nuts. Light roasted malt, fruity and molasses with notes of caramel and dried fruits. Moderate sweet finish. Not much of character here.

Bottle from a sampler pack. Good amber, but not the best Hertog offering. Slightly sweet and dry.

Bottle. Amber colour, white head. Aroma of sweet malts, caramel, fruits. Flavour is fruity, sweet and malty, a bit caramel. Dry mouthfeel. Metallic aftertaste. Nice amber beer.

Bottle. Thank you BeerBiker. BB 02/09. Pours amber with a creamy white head & lacings. Aroma is strong of yeast & dark fruits - quite matured & a bit old. Metallic old taste - seems to be a bit over the top already

Amber with a lasting off-white head. Sweet sugary aroma with a fruity note of ripe pears. Thin and weak sweet flavour. Disappointing.

Bottled (thanks brunnsbe!). Amber colour, mediumsized creamy beige head, which lasts for quite a while. Aroma is sweet caramel malts along with slight alcohol and yeast. Flavour is sweet caramel malts, some alcoholic sweetness and big sourness and yeastyness finishing it off. A pleasantly made thing, though not very special.

Dark, brown colour, no head at all. Sweet aroma. Sour taste. Not special, not too bad.

Nice red-brown colour. Aroma is sweet and malty. Slightly bitter-sweet flavour with some malt. Very rich flavour makes it not a very sessionable beer but it’s nice as a one-off.

Test vom 8.5.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 8,9,9,10,9,9 - 9,05
