Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "VanderGhinste Roodbruin".
The main ingredients of our Vanderghinste Roodbruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer.
Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak barrels for 18 months, results in this specific West Flanders Red-brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Pours dark brown with a red hue and a thinning, foamy, off-white head. The aroma contains vinegar, wood, sour cherry, brown sugar. It tastes heavy fruity sour and light woody bitter; tart, cherry-like finish. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Nice one. (Edited 20/5/18)

Bottle shared thanks to Sjogro as roodbruin. Clear dark chestnut with red hue and off white head. Sweet red fruits, light lactic notes, light spices, sour berries, balsamico, lots of oxidized sherry-like notes, brown sugar. Medium sweet and sour. Medium bodied with slick feel. Decent.

Bottle. Sweet and sour with small notes of red wine and oak. Obviously a llighter kind of oud bruin, but I actually enjoy it a lot! High drinkability.

On tap @Buskers Pub (Rome). Pours deep amber/reddish with a decent off-white head. Aroma of sour red fruits, caramel, yeasts, light vinegar, nice. Flavour is light sour with a sugary end. Medium body, medium carbonation. Nice, despite that sweetness.

0.25 l bottle from De Bierkoning as ’VanderGhinste Oud Bruin’, best before 6/5/2016. Clear, deep brownish red with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan head. Sweetish-sourish, fruity-malty aroma of vinegar, bitter almond, red wine, dark cherries and oak. Sweetish-sourish, fruity-malty taste of vinegar, red wine, bitter almond, dark cherries and oak, followed by a short, tart and oaky finish. Medium body, slightly astringent and spritzy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nicely balanced, aromatic and refreshing, but not overly deep or complex. Still nice!

A dark reddish brown beer, a head is small and beige. Aroma has cherries, sourness, some balsamico, balanced. Taste has cherries and some berries, medium bitterness, hint of cherry stones. Medium bodied, not sticky. Good and balanced.
