Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "VanderGhinste Roodbruin".

The main ingredients of our Vanderghinste Roodbruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer.

Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak barrels for 18 months, results in this specific West Flanders Red-brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness. This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

24.03.2014, tap (as VanderGhinste Oud Bruin) @ Crowbar:
Small creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet sour-ish, caramel, sour winegum, grass, butterscotch, sour apples, soda powder, hints of paint. Taste is slightly sour-ish fruity, sour winegum, sour apples, sorrel, soda powder, butterscotch, caramel malts grass. Little bitterness, kind of a metallic mouthfeel. Fair enough.

Rerating, a year later, this time on draft at the Seattle IBF. Pours a reddish brown color with a thin foam ring head. Not nearly as sour as I remember it. More sweet, with a grape juice like flavor. Sweet and sour berry and grape finish. Very tasty.

3oz pour at Max’s Belgian Fest 2014. Pours a clear caramel amber with a ring of brown head. Nose is malty, sugar, cherry, mild vinegar. Flavor is well balanced, tart, sweet, cherry, vinegar, malt, grass, vegetal. Lightly acetic finish. Pretty solid.

--- Beer aliased from original tick of Oud Bruin on 18 May 2018 at 10:04 - Score: 8

Ruby-red with hints of brown in the glass with a beige head. The nose is not too sour, slightly fruity. The beer starts fruity, not too sour. Full of aroma. The mainpart has hints of dark cherries, nice sourness, hints of wood. Probably a bit too sweet. The aftertaste is long, intense. Wood, dark red fruits, moderate sourness, only hints of hops.
Nice brew, but for me a bit too sweet. Nice fruity-sour characteristics! --> 12/12/10/11

Brown and red, aroma is sweet, with mild barrel notes. Sweet and sour, candy and barrel and cherry, and quite interesting. Nice example.

25 cl. bottle @ Café Olivier, Utrecht as Vanderghinste Oud Bruin. Pours brown with a thin off-white head. Raisin and oak aroma. Sweet sour taste with a drak/red fruit fruitiness. Not as tart as Rodenbach but refreshing nonetheless. Flemish red brown is one of my favorite styles and this is a fine specimen of said style.
