Redhook’s flagship beer got its start as a winter seasonal recipe in the mid 80’s. In the early years, Extra Special Bitter earned a reputation as ‘banana beer’ and has been brewed continuously since 1987. ESB’s caramel malt sweetness and subtle spice and fruit hop flavors, quickly defined the style, becoming Seattle’s definitive craft beer and inspiring a new wave of craft beers across the country.

Overall Impression: One of those beers you see all over the place, you might call it a semi-micro, and it's pretty solid especially given price/availability. It's more malty then hoppy, bready, and a little spice. Light bitterness.

Tap at the Bob Hope Airport. Pours with a small, off-white head with decent lacing and a clear gold body. Aroma is malty and toasty with raw grain with light honey and some caramel. Flavor has a fruity hop up front with a clean, long lasting malty finish with a few fruity esters and some huskiness. Watery mouthfeel, light carbonation.

Cask at GBBF08. Weak fruity aroma. Almost clear amber colour. Very small frothy white head. OK fruit flavour, some alcohol. Has a hint of plastic, but nothing to worry about.

Cask at GBBF 08. Slight hazy amber. Thin beige head. Not a great ESB, some good fruit, but no body to back it up. I expected it to be darker to reflect the style. Some US hop on end. Bit of grapefruit. Still a bit murky as I’m not sure it was 100% ready to be served.

Pours amber into an English pint. White head quickly recedes leaving no lacing. Slight caramel aromas. Smooth and full with slight bitter metallic from front to back. Lasting bitter finish.

Aroma of light roasted malt with somewhat floral hop. Coppery kind of color with a white head that didn’t amount to much. Pleasant surprise. NIce floral hop, with possibly a bit of citrus, and some roasted malt. Very like an English ESB, but more strong in flavor. Medium body with mild carbonation. Pleasant drink. Finish is not overly anything. Nice balance. Good taste.

Golden with a mild haze. Citrusy sweet aroma. Some earth tones and lemon tossed on top of a malty backbone - a bit one dimensional. The lemon really kicks in when you take a sip. Some malts, citrus, and earth, as well. Body lacks depth. At first I didn’t think this was all that great a brew, but drinkable. Now, as I drink more I am finding it difficult to go back for another sip because that angry lemon bite keeps getting stronger and stronger.
