Redhook’s flagship beer got its start as a winter seasonal recipe in the mid 80’s. In the early years, Extra Special Bitter earned a reputation as ‘banana beer’ and has been brewed continuously since 1987. ESB’s caramel malt sweetness and subtle spice and fruit hop flavors, quickly defined the style, becoming Seattle’s definitive craft beer and inspiring a new wave of craft beers across the country.

Draught. Clear coppr with some white head. Fruity aroma. Medium body and carbonation. Flavour is sweet malt and fruity (lychees) with a hint of bitterness in the finish. Reasonable, easy drinking beer.

12 oz bottle into English pint. Okay, here we have Redhook’s flagship beer. I’ve never been a big ESB guy, but I bought this variety pack and I feel like ranking. Faint aromas of grain, sugar, somewhat spicytarty (I just made that word up, but it accurately describes this beer’s aroma--call Webster, I just found the perfect word to describe the aromas in a lot of the beers I’ve had. I want it trademarked, dammit). Pours golden-amber with a medium-sized head and nice sticky lacing. My first impression after the first drink: this is almost as boring as the Slim Chance I just drank. A slight caramel flavor comes out, as well as salty notes and some grain. Carbonation is medium. A very dull, inoffensive beer.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours cloudy orange with a small off-white head. Aroma is dry fruity, grapefruity and mild peachy. Sweet fruity impression. Dry malt base, crisp hops and nice citrusy bitterness. Sweet, citric, peachy and fruity finish.

bottle, pours hazy dark carmel with a medium light tan head. Aroma is nice and hoppy with pine and grapefruit notes. Sweet malt and a nice noble hop finish with a lingering cirtus note. I like it.

12 ounce bottle from a sampler. Pours a slighty hazy amber color with a thin head. Fair head retention and decent lacing. Aroma is earthy with notes of caramel and leafy hops. Taste is caramel, plum, peach and other fruity notes, leafy, bitter hops, nutty notes as well. Medium bodied. Good beer.

8th August 2008. On tap at GBBF. Fruity, clean light brown beer. Soft palate, sweet with a nice generic fruitisness the runs throughout. Very nice!

One of the better Red Hook beers that I have had. Pours yellow with a pretty nice head. Hoppy aroma. Some sharp bitterness. Mostly just bready malts; a pleasant beer overall.
