Redhook’s flagship beer got its start as a winter seasonal recipe in the mid 80’s. In the early years, Extra Special Bitter earned a reputation as ‘banana beer’ and has been brewed continuously since 1987. ESB’s caramel malt sweetness and subtle spice and fruit hop flavors, quickly defined the style, becoming Seattle’s definitive craft beer and inspiring a new wave of craft beers across the country.

355ml bottle into schooner glass. More than a Cornflakes aroma, perhaps Frosties! Hazy amber beer with thin film on top. A few bubbles. Full bodied, sweet malt taste. Slight zing in the mouth. Alcohol and bitterness noticeable in the finish. Not great and nothing like an ESB.

Bottle in IC Amsterdam-The Hague. Clear reddish orange/amber with thin white head. Sweet toasted malts, very malty, light caramel, sweet grain, light fruity notes, marmalade. Light sweet, light bitter. Medium body, bit gelly smooth, greasy, reminiscent of melted butter. Bit plain in taste but very pleasant feel and experience. --- Beer merged from original tick of Redhook ESB on 21 Nov 2017 at 22:13 - Score: 6. Original review text: 3.3

Bottle shared in the train thanks to sjogro. BVO WTF! Clear slight orange golden with small white head. Sweet caramel, orange peel, toffee, cane sugar, lots of sweet malts basically with soft citrus notes. Medium sweet with very light bitterness. Bit under medium bodied.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Signal Variety. Aroma is crackers and bread. Appearance is lightly hazy pale copper with fair sparkle, finger-width fluffy white head with fair retention and decent foamy lacing. Taste is mild sweet cracker/biscuit with light toast, on the caramelized side; mild bitter balance. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin texture and lively carbonation, mild sweet finish. Overall, highly drinkable with fair grades all around but nothing spectacular.

Bottle, 0.355l. Cloudy orange amber color with thin soapy off-white head and sparkling appearance. Aroma of caramel, grass, cereals and berries. Taste starts with moderate sweet caramel and dandelion syrup, follows light fruity and grassy with mild medicinal note, mouth feel is mild spicy and rather dry, while finish is moderate bitter. Light to medium body, oily texture and fizzy carbonation in palate. Didn’t expect much and didn’t get much more...

Bottle. Clear amber with a white head. Gentle aroma of bread crusts, peach, vague but pleasant and quite bright "other" fruit, mild spices. Just a little sweetness in the bread and biscuit malt, light floral and vague fruity notes. Quite dry and moderately bitter at the end. A little strong for what it offers, but decent enough.
