Redhook’s flagship beer got its start as a winter seasonal recipe in the mid 80’s. In the early years, Extra Special Bitter earned a reputation as ‘banana beer’ and has been brewed continuously since 1987. ESB’s caramel malt sweetness and subtle spice and fruit hop flavors, quickly defined the style, becoming Seattle’s definitive craft beer and inspiring a new wave of craft beers across the country.

Bottle from SuperValu, Kimmage, Dublin [240714] BBE 2/8/14
Orange amber, clear, frothy fluffy white head that dissipates, some lacing
Aroma of US caramel toffee malts, quite sweet, not all that keen on the malt
Taste of caramel malts, soft toffee, dab of toasted malt, not much going on, touch of fruits, dull for abv
Palate - soft carb, medium body, quite sweet, some soft bitter hops. Finish as main flavour
Overall - Ordinary, found this a bit boring and dull...maybe bottle was too old

330ml bottle at Café Sånn in Tromsø. Slowly diminishing pearl white head. Amber coloured body with a slight haze. Moderate, mixed hopped aroma of lemon and grass, malty sweetness beneath. Well blended, succulent taste of orange, lemon, and mild caramel sustained by a bittersweet ending. Fine bodied. Fresh and soft in the mouth. A nice partner to my Tromsø fish burger (05.06.2014).

Bottle at Caf Fiasco, Oslo. Has a slightly hazy light orange colour and a small, off-white head. Sweet and fruity aroma with caramel, apricot and some leather. Has a fruity flavour as well with lots of apricot and grassy hops in the end. Slick mouth feel, and has a light to medium bitterness. An easy-drinking and fruity ale.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a golden light brown colored body with a thin fizzy white head that died within ten seconds. No lacing was seen. Some carbonation was rising at a moderate pace.
The smell was centered around the malt with the hops coming in slightly, some apple and cherry come out as well.
The taste centered around the malts and once again the hops come in but take the background. Slight floral tones came out in the taste with a subtle bitter finish.
The palate was about a medium. The carbonation was definitely felt, almost came out a bit harsh. It was mostly drinkable.
Overall, well, I like the beer, just might have it again.

Aroma of metal, hops, sugar. Copper colour, flat carbon. Yellow head. Tries to be sweet but ends up being metallic. Like the worst red ale there is.

Handy 12 fl. oz bottle. Light unclear golden to amber in the glass, small short living head. Low carbonated. Like honey and cherry on the nose. Starts malty with wild honey and cherries, light bitterness. A little bit flat on the tongue in the middle part. Light roast malty. Nice one.

Bottle shared at a tasting at kerenmk’s place. Slightly hazy deep golden-orange. Aroma of slightly stale malt, cookies, fruity notes and a light floral hops hint. Sweetish flavor with malt, some fruitiness, biscuit, cardboard notes, caramel and a finish with mild bitterness, a bit earthy. Medium-bodied.

Bottle. Pours clear full golden with small off-white head. Clear aroma of hops with a note of citrus and a heavy malty touch. Bitter, hoppy flavour with grassy and bready notes and an acidic touch. Bitter finish. My #1492. I am ready to conquer paradise now!
