Redhook’s flagship beer got its start as a winter seasonal recipe in the mid 80’s. In the early years, Extra Special Bitter earned a reputation as ‘banana beer’ and has been brewed continuously since 1987. ESB’s caramel malt sweetness and subtle spice and fruit hop flavors, quickly defined the style, becoming Seattle’s definitive craft beer and inspiring a new wave of craft beers across the country.

(Bottle, 0.355 l - bottling date unreadable, at Oluttupa Viisi Penniä, 20130831) The beer poured amber and clear. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had malts, caramell and hops. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, caramell, grassy hops, molasses and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A decent malt forward beer.

Dry and mildly bitter ale. Pours darkish amber with oily beige head. Aroma is light hops, malt and caramel. Taste is hops, dry malt, pine, wood. Reminds me of a redwood forest.

Bottle: Clear, copper coloured, stable creamy off-white head, showing a nice lacework, mild but still spicy toasty and hoppy nose; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied, pretty soft; lingering dry herbal-hoppy finish with toasty-fruity spots. Nice brew; similar, but not completely, to the original…

(bottle, 35.5cl) Clear, amber to copper colour with a short and slightly tanned foamy head. Caramel-malty aroma with a subtle fruity touch and woody hops. Moderately sweet flavour, light to medium bodied with a modest carbonation. Mildly bready cara-malty taste with traces of oak honey, subtle fruity notes and a touch of woody and slightly spicy hops; moderately sweet bready malty finish with caramel/toffee and drying woody hops. Tasty but also not overly exciting from the European perspective. 22.VI.13

Bottle. Disatrous ESB totally dominanted by diacetyl. Butter, vegtables, hops. Not true to style.

Bottle at Lillys Burgers, Stockholm. Pours slightly hazy amber. Sweet aroma of fudge and malt. An OK brew, malty, hint of honney. Slighly hoppier than a UK esb.
