It’s so great that you like coffee. I just love that about you. Speaking of which, you’re holding an oatmeal coffee stout positively redolent with coffee aroma and flavor. It kind of tastes like a chocolate-covered espresso bean, only drier and more like beer. Nifty fact: we’re one of the only breweries in the world to roast our own coffee, which allows us to be extremely persnickety about which beans we buy and how we roast them. Taste the persnicketiness!

can dark brown, light brown head. strong aroma of cofee powder, mild roasted malts, dark chocolate. flavor is lots of coffee, some really dark chocolate, roasted malts, toffee, faint licorice, good lingering dark beery aftertaste. A really good traditional stout, not so strong, but lots of flavor albeit a bit watery, like a guinness. If you feel like a solid but not alc. heavy stout this is a good choice. (at 5.8%).

1 point can from hopt.it, France. Pours dark brown, almost black, with fine brown foam. Aroma is of coffee, very clearly. Freshly grounded coffee, to be precise. Body and carbonation are average. Taste is pretty roasty, but not really bitter, vaguely sweet. Final is average.

I have been aware of Modern Times for some time now, they do not have distribution where I live. But I did obtain a mix of stouts from Tavour with Black House included. Tonight's tasting is being shared with my son over the internet since he has a 16 oz can of the brew also. I picked my Great Heights snifter for the occasion, the pour is a dark brown, one shade short of black with a small rim of beige foam. I take a drink. A very nice fullness for a basic stout, just to begin with. The taste is strong with the coffee, licorice, a hint of caramel and nice with the malt. I would buy and drink again.

6 week old pint can A: Poured a huge long lasting tan head atop a dark molasses brown to black body. S: Heavy on coffee with rich chocolate and caramel. T: Roasty but smooth without tasting burnt. Coffee up front, a little bitter chocolate from the nose and just a hint of caramel sweetness to finish. M: Light, thin bodied and smooth textured with soft carbonation and a sticky finish. O: Well blended, balanced and subtle flavors along with a reasonable ABV make this a very urbane example of the style.

Leute, die rösten ihre eigenen Bohnen, unfassbar. Und das schmeckt man. Ich hatte in der Tat noch nie so eine Bohnigkeit im Bier. Sehr lecker.

Almost, but not quite. Starts with a tasty flash of chocolate, roast, and coffee, backed up by hints of anise and cascara, and a subtle caramel-tinged sweetness underneath. Finishes with a decent amount of java and roast, but never quite develops the depth you want in the style. Coffee first, stout second, which is the opposite of what it should be.
