[Cask at the Monk’s Retreat (JDW), Reading] Chestnut-red with a small, loose beige head. Very sweet toffee up front, a little banana and some soap. Maybe a hint of spice. And then… just sweet and dull and boring really, with a slight dryness in the finish. Not for me this one.

Hand-pulled pint in the Wetherspoons pub, Bridgnorth, Shropshire on 26th Oct 2012. Interesting slant on a Belgian Brown and not really like the bottled one I had years ago. This beer had a dull, murky brown body, on top a creamy foam head. The nose was both yeasty and malty: with an off-ish, musty, moldy hint (not as off putting as it sounds). The taste was malty and slightly yeasty but not sour or spicy. It was OK but not great, a bit thin and watery for what I was expecting.

Cask, gravity dispensed, at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Reddish copper with a ring of translucent cream head; caramel aroma; sweet and fruity - like a purple Rowntree’s Fruit Pastille he says, in a slightly pseudy moment; and with a soft caramel finish. Really pleasant, but no sign of the Gruut.

Bottle. Hazy red body, medium dissipating beige head. Nose of toffee, dense breads, and spice. Dryish body, with toast, prune, toffee, and yeast. Plain and boring after a few sips. But there are so many more to go.

A - Gorgeous yellow cloudy beer. Light ultra creamy head SRM of 5
S - Lemon and citrus. Wheat and watermelon
T - Yeah. Nice citrus taste. Big wheat profile.
M - 100% carbonation. Medium body. Semi-dry finish
O - 90/100. Pretty darn drinkable. Nice and smooth.

Clear deep ruby red to red brown beer, big creamy light beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of sweet caramel, bit floral, dried fruits. MF: ok carbon, light to medium body, not what you expect from a dubbel. Taste: very metallic, green banana, some caramel, bitter hops, almost grassy, and sugar. Aftertaste: caramel, bitter hops. Not very exciting.

Brown 33cl bottle, best before 23rd March 2010, stored my me for a while but drank 1st Feb 2010. Poured into a Westmalle chalice, all of it, the sediment and whatever it contained ended up in the glass. A thin tan coloured head sat on top of a deep ruby red body. Although the head was thin it left some good lacing. The aroma was slightly sour, almost vinegarous at first, then a malty smell took over. First sip reminded me of a Rodenbach, a sour cherry sort of taste. This resemblence didn’t last long, the sour cherry flavours gave way to a dry malt bitterness (no hops evident). The alcohol content appeared towards the end of the mouthfeel as the mouth dried. Fairly high carbonisation and a little thin for a Dubbel, I however enjoyed the tasting and would definately have another.
