Master brewer Gerard van den Broek made his ideal wheat beer: Hertog Jan Weizener. This willful wheat beer combines the best of a German weizen and Belgian witbier. The hop, malted wheat, fresh yeast, coriander and orange peel give it a full, fresh flavor and a deep gold color with a slight haze. The secondary fermentation on the bottle creates a fresher and richer taste and aroma.

(30cl bottle) Hazy, orange-golden colour with a big and dense, cream-coloured foamy head. Sweet and slightly yeasty wheat-malty aroma with a shy to moderate touch of banana, accompanied by notes of coriander, cloves and vanilla. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, medium bodied with a rather mild carbonation. Present wheat-character with light fruity notes and vanilla; sweet and slightly bitter-tart finish with a tangy spice of coriander. Smells and looks good but is not very balanced. Hefeweizen meets Witbier, at least an interesting experience (21.IV.09).

Bottle: Hazy, golden to orangey coloured, small off-white foamy layer; cloves, nutmeg and wheat in the nose; light to medium bodied, moderate sweetish-sourish flavour; lingering sourish-wheaty finish with an unharmonic tartness in the aftertaste. Not very convincing...........

Bottle, 5.7%. Distinct coriander aroma, almost candyish. Cloudy dark yellow colour. White head. The flavour has the same distinct coriander note. Partially balanced by a little lemon citrus flavour. But not quite.

Quite spicy and aromatic. Bittersweetness of the orange zest comes through quite strongly. Overall a fresh, easy drinking beer. Nothing special though.

Good, fine-bubbled off-white head, stable over muddy yellow-orange beer. Bit lactic, milk-ripe wheat nose, later typical banana and especially cloves aroma, even nutmeg. Spicy, mild fruity taste, oranges, banana, wheat. Very classical German, until the retronasal mounting flavour of coriander. Slick, typical wheat palate, mild-spritzy. Belgian wit?? My left foot, this is classical German Weizen - with the coriander exception, of course.
