At Goose Island our brewers take every opportunity to experiment with new ingredients and aging techniques. For this edition of Bourbon County Brand Stout, they aged the classic recipe in rye whiskey barrels with raspberries and blackberries from Michigan. The result is a powerfully rich beer with notes of tart fruit and jam that fade into the warm spice of a fine rye whiskey.Bourbon County Stout aged in Heaven Hill Rye barrels with 60 pounds of raspberries and blackberries added to barrel.

EB. Not bad given how old it is by the combination of the dark beer, slightly acidic (and of course highly fruity) berries and Sherry-like oxidation doesn’t quite work for me.

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of dried fruits, raisins, malty, sweet, forest fruits. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sourish, very fruits, raspberries, alcohol, sour cherries, boozy, forest fruits, vanilla, caramel, pretty sugary. Aftertaste: sweet, red currants, alcohol, boozy, very fruity, sourish touch, vanilla, more alcohol, very alcoholic. Finished the bottle and got wasted after all. :p The end of a great tasting!

Sample at the Ping Pong, Foosball, and Great Beer tasting on 03/03/2012. Pours an inky black color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of berry jam, oak and malt. Rich body with flavors of tart berries, malt, oak and vanilla. The finish is fruity with a lingering raspberry coffee aftertaste. Good beer all around.
