Pernicious is our flagship India Pale Ale boasting a silver medal at this year’s Great American Beer Festival. This massively dry-hopped ale has minimum malt complexity and a combination of juicy, tropical fruit-forward hops with heavy resinous American hops. Pernicious is the epitome of a West Coast IPA, made right here in the Southeast.

This review was imported from my RateBeer ratings.

12 oz. can, 7.3% ABV

AROMA: Bitter with scents of pine, hops, resin, and grapefruit.

APPEARANCE: Pours a clear, light gold, with a tightly frothy white head that dissipates slowly. There is minimal lacing.

TASTE: Slightly sweet on the front-end and minimal bitterness on the back-end. Honestly, based off of the aroma, I was expecting something much more bitter than this. Which made for a pleasant surprise. Predominant flavors are grapefruit, pine, and hops. There is another flavor that is very subtle, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is that I'm tasting, but it's something in the citrus family (orange?, tangerine?). At any rate, it adds a nice "juicy" component!

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-bodied with a smooth texture and slightly above-average carbonation. The finish is dry and slightly bitter.

OVERALL: I got this in a sampler pack that showcases 4 different beers, and this is the third beer that I've tried from it. So far, this is my favorite. Mostly because it's not overly bitter, has a refreshing "juicy" quality to it, and has some good citrus flavor that's not overpowering. I'm not a huge IPA fan but I could see myself buying a six-pack of this several times a year.

Can. Pours a clear yellow gold with a white head that lasts throughout the beer and laces. Aroma has dank mango with some pine bite and a hint of sweet grains backing. Flavor is more pine forward with a bit of dank tropical fruits growing in the finish.

7 week old pint can A: Bright pale gold pour with 1/2 of frothy white head, retaining very well with thick lace. S: Light scent of orange or tangerine citrus, pine and caramel. T: Bitter pine and pith featuring lemon or grapefruit citrus notes. Dry malty flavors of light wood and biscuit provide nice balance with minimal sweetness. M: Crisp feel and carbonation with a lightly resinous dry finish. O: Drinks light for its strength. Tasty and clean. Good all around.

12oz can. Filtered tan-yellow body. Respectable, steady, white head. Sort of a classical West Coast-ish IPA. Leans way more into the bitterness than the juice. Filtered body keeps it drinkable despite the reasonable stronge ABV. Pretty good.
