Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian's rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

Weicher, alkohlisch getreidiger Beginn. Deutliche Holznoten, im Mittelteil hopfige, später deutlich bittere Noten. Süßlich alkoholische Pflaumenaromen. 13/10/11/11/8/11

Bottle, 14C. Copper with an inch of beige head that fades a bit. Aroma of toffee, pine, grapefruit, peaches. Taste is abruptly bitter and boozy then very sweet with some raisins and dried peaches and lots of toffee and butterscotch. Quite syrupy, although there’s some creaminess. Pine, alcohol and bitterness re-emerge at the end. Bitterness creeps up after a while. Too sweet and heavy for the hops to run the show and too bitter to invite one to savour the malt side, it ends up a bit tedious. Not my sort of thing.

66cl from my beer cellar, 3 years old. Thick off white head. More bitter than sweet. Slightly hazy amber pour. Yummy, more of an IPA than a barley wine even after 3 years

650 ml bottle at VilleValla Pub. Bottled 2010, consumed in 2011. Clear, deep amber/red liquid with small to medium off-white head. Aroma of caramel, bread, wort, raw sugar, pine, resinous hops and toffee. Yum. Taste is ligh to medium sweet, medium to heavily bitter and malty with notes of caramel and wort. Full bodied with light carbonation and sticky mouthfeel. A bit warming and boozy. Nice one. Quite smooth and balanced, probably thanks to the short aging that has taken away some of the most aggressive hoppiness and booze.

0.75l bottle @ Henrik, Bergen. Pours a mild cloudy deep ruby color with a small bubbly caramelly head. Aroma is really sweet with malts, lots of roasted caramel, dried fruits, candy sugar and some ripe strawberries. Full-bodied, has a sticky mouthfeeling and soft to average carbonation. Starts off really sweet, fruity and with some alcohol before it completely changes character in to a really hopy and bitter barley wine. Smooth flavors and quite nicely balanced between the sweet and the bitter. Quite a satisfying barley wine indeed!

Bottle (12/09 batch): Pours a flat caramel color with a finger of creamy tan head. Lots of sticky lacing. Rich, malty aroma with citrus, tropical fruit, florals, and caramel. At first sip I am really loving the bitter hops presence in the taste (yeah, just like the bottle says, but damn it if its not true). Florals, citrus, pine, and caramel. Bitter and intense, but smooth. Very nice version of the style. Excellent.

Bottle @ Hotelroom, Denver, Co. Thanks to Patrick at GD. Pours deep dark mahogny with a nice lasting offwhite head, long lasting laces on the glass. Aroma is malt,, caramel, nuts, toffee, dark dried fruit and a hint of dark chocolate. Taste is at first rather sweet with caramel, toffee, chocolate, dark dried fruit, some oak, later on the bitterness hits with pine and grapefruit notes. Medium to full body, long bitter finish, ABV pretty well hidden. Overall a very good barley wine. 011210
