Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian's rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

Delicious aroma with hops, exotic fruits, some raisins and caramel. Flavour is somewhat sweet with American hops, exotic fruits, caramel, raisins and hints of grapefruit. Rather hoppy and very good BW!

Aroma is sweet with caramel, woody notes, resin and vanilla. Flavour is hoppy with fruity notes, apricot, resin, wood and some caramel. Finishes with hops and mint. Also some alcohol is present but if doesn’t disturb. Rather heavy, good and rich. But not as good as I remembered.

Pours ruby red with great creamy head and lacing. Smells like fruity hops and booze. Some malt creepin on this as well. Taste has heavy bitterness. Nice thick consistency, comes off creamy, a little oily. Some saltiness on tip of tongue. Bottle.

On draft at Meridian Pint, DC. Vintage Dec 2010. Pours a cloudy amber with an off white head. Surprisingly hoppy aroma for a barley wine. Stale hop flavor. Bitter finish. 3.4

Bottle. Pours cloudy amber with floaties and a small beige head that dissipates quickly with a touch of lacing. Aroma is caramel, citrus, pine, and something odd and astringent. Flavor is lightly sweet, quite bitter but not in the good hoppy way, more in the metallic flagpole licking way. What the hell is so great about this beer?

Bomber Courtesy of Jonathan (non-RB). Pours clear deep amber with a frothy and rather fizzy offwhite head that quickly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing and trace on the glass. Smell is very sweet and malty with caramel, sweet dark bread, brown sugar, pine, lemon zest, alcohol, vanilla, toffee and oatmeal cookies. Taste is sweet and bitter with caramel, freshly cut grass, sweet dark rye bread, toffee, raisins in rum, burnt sugar, marmalade, oily pine, resin, wet leaves, moss and damp wood/soil. Mouthfeel is intense, sticky sweet, oily bitter, slightly boozy and full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet and bitter with caramel, oily pine, wet soil, resinous wood, wet soil and straw. Very intense...
