Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian's rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

Drought. Brown with reddish tint, beige creamy head, slight piney aroma mingled with mocha, stinging alcohol taste partially covered by hops, low carbonation, long finish. Strong pine aroma is well covering the high alcohol content.

22oz bottle from Nov. 2010. Aroma has a a faint spicy and herbal hop character. Moderate caramel with some light toffee notes. Medium light fruit esters of raisin, prune, plum and fig. Pours a slightly murky amber brown with a medium thick tan head with decent retention that lingers on the edges along with a thin film on top. Flavor is similar with a light hop character of herbal and pine resin character with moderately strong to strong bitterness. A light citrus hop character. Moderate caramel flavor with a light toffee note. Light fruit esters of raisin, fig, plum and prune. Light alcohol spice in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall a fairly enjoyable American barley wine but not amazing either. Some faint hop character still present. Oxidation is very faint and fruitiness is light and complimentary.

A wonderful barley wine from a great brewery. Shared a chilled 22oz - complex and strong as you’d expect, but very easy to drink - few of these bad boys could whoop ya. Big fan - yet to try a beer from great divide that I didn’t like

Tap at Great Divide, Denver. Poured a hazy dark amber with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is rich fruit alcohol and resin. The flavour is strong bitter with a big resin liqourice slightly metallic palate, Nice to taste not something to drink on a regular basis!

Bottle at Brewdog Birmingham; excellent night shared with Gurd and Jezzam light amber pout with the thinnest of white heads, big hoppy aroma backed up with a strong sense of alcohol, taste comes through with big grapfruit hops a level of caramel sweetness expected with big USA barley wines, just the right level of bitterness, excellent.

Taste is sweet, sticky and malty with loads of caramel, syrup, toffee, ripe fruits and bitter hops. Finish is sweet, bitter and malty with hints of fruitiness. Quite nicely balanced, bitter and malty barley wine.

Flaska från Systembolaget. Djupt kopparröd, klar, vätska. Livligt gulvitt skum, snabbt avklingande.
