Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian's rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

Dense light tan head on a beautiful mahogany body. Nose has an array of fruity hops malt, booze and candied fruit. Lots of good things going on in the taste profile - slightly piney hop bitterness with some berries and grapefruit, roasted caramel malt, and some spice and pepper. Sweet but not cloying. A medium dense body. Classic American Barley Wine balances but not big enough to be an all-star.

Bottle. brown color. Red berries, malt and cascade hops in the aroma. Hint of cinnamon. Malty sweet flavor with flowery and earthy hops, citrus and raspberry. Warming alcohol, reasonably well hidden. A taste bomb that is still pretty well balanced.

12 ounce bottle. Bottled on January 28, 2015. Hazy brown pour. Brief beige head. Sweet toasted malt nose hints at caramel. Malty, burnt sugar flavor upfront. Rich and complex. Light carbonation. Notes of dark brown sugar and resiny pine. Intensely bitter finish.,

From Nov 2005

Poured from the bottle(room temp) a gorgeous ruby red-brown with a sizeable head that dissipated after about 10 minutes into a fine layer with lacing.

The smell that came from this brew is awesome! I note fruit, hops, and sweet caramel malt that has me spending more time with my nose in the glass than a person oughta shoulda. ;^)

And....the promise from the smell does NOT fail to tranfer itself to the taste in big bold fashion. The sweetness of the malt and the bitterness of the hops just works so darn well together that I literally have to pinch myself to make sure that I'm not dreaming. Then, add the fruity tones(hard to say which is dominant. Grapefruit, plum, other?) to the mix and here, imho, is a Barley Wine Style Ale that sets the standard by which all others should be judged. And I'm a BIG fan of SN Bigfoot

Btw, the +10% abv doesn't even come into play as far as the taste goes and that's *another* testament to how great this brew really is.

Life is good. :^)

Bubbly beige head stayed on a ruby still body. Malt, over stewed fruit, marmalade, spice & dark berries aroma. Full bodied, thick, syrupy, cloying, minimal carbonation & quite sticky on the palate. Dry on the aft. Taste is much as the aroma, dry dark berries, bitter underripe fruit, overripe fruit, apple & a very bitter finish. Tremendous

BOTTLE 12 OZ. Clear dark copper, sediment, beige head. Super sticky sweet aroma, caramel and rosewater. Big sweet sticky taste, with an aggressive balancing bitterness just as big.

Tap. Amber color with beige head. Aroma is toffee, caramel, resinous. Taste is resinous, piney hops, orange juice, and a full brown sugar-like malt body. Bittersweet finish. Silky mouthfeel, fine-bubbled carbonation. Very nice hop-forward Barley Wine
