Hoss is based on the Märzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with some hints of cherry and dark notes, dominate while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.

Copper color. Moderate carbonation. Aroma has lager yeast, with very lightly roasted grain. Surprisingly sweet with malts. Very light spice, and minimal hops. A nice beer.

On tap at the brewery where I’ve been for better part of afternoon at this point. Taste is creamy and of toasted grains, pears, and spicy rye. enjoyable for the style which I have really attacked with rates this season.

355cl bottle from GBBF 2010. Light brown with a thin beige head. Some spicy rye on the aroma. Fairly easy drinking with some more rye on the finish. Drinks really well. Fullish in mouth. Finish has some dryness and some fruit. Maybe less full on the malts Marzen compared with the German originals.

From tap. Pours cloudy dark amber with a small tan head. Aroma is fruity and rather malty. Roasted, caramelish and breadish malty flavoured. Mild fruity note coming through. Lingering fruity and lasting rye malty flavoured into the far finish. Ends dry.

12oz bottle split. Filtered looking orange-red. Frothy off white head. Sweet malt aroma with just a hint of noble hops. Rye really seems to be a good adjunct to incorporate into a Marzen, it’s gingerbread characteristics work well with the doughy lager tones. Well balanced, well executed. Steady noble hops. Pretty good stuff. An amped up, modern Marzen.

On tap at White Horse SW6. Dark orange-red in colour, moderate carbonation with white, foamy, long-lasting head. Nose; Cut-grass, rye and dandelions. Palate; blood-orange, sour raspberries, cloves, cinnamon and star-anise with a short, but smooth finish. Middle of the road overall.

12 oz bottle into lager glass. Aroma is pretty subdued, but there’s some perfumey notes and caramel noticeable. Pours a clear to slightly hazy copper hue with a medium dissappearing head and creamy lace. Very malty on the tastebuds. Bittersweet. Finishes grainy and alcoholic. Highly carbonated. Pretty average on all levels.
