Hoss is based on the Märzen lagers of Germany. Rich, layered malt notes, with some hints of cherry and dark notes, dominate while the unique addition of rye imparts a slightly earthy, spicy character. Hoss finishes crisp and dry, and its brilliant red-orange color is a toast to the late-summer sunsets that make the perfect backdrop for this beer.

Bottle. Amber body with a frothy, off-white head. Grainy aroma along with scents of toasted bread, flowers with a hint of citrus. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Interesting twist on an Oktoberfest. Sweet, malty beginning with a nice bite from the rye in the finish. Solid.

Bottle. Pours clear copper with a creamy 3-finger beige head. Nice "celery" aroma - rye! Medium body with creamy carbonation. It’s rye and noble spice, ending a bit sweet. It’s lacing somewhat and tasting great. Love rye.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear, vibrant orange-amber color with an offwhite frothy head. Good head retention and nice lacing. Aroma is caramel, toasted malts and a spicy vibe from the rye. Taste is caramel, toasted malts, fruity, floral and slightly peppery notes and a dry rye bite in the finish. Medium bodied. This is very close to what I’m looking for in a marzen, one of my favorite styles. If it weren’t so damned expensive around here I’d buy a lot more.

draft at the brewpub - Pours really orange with a small head. It has a mild, malty aroma. The flavor is lightly roasted malt with a light to medium body and some rye in the background. It’s okay but I wasn’t impressed. Rerate July 2012 - Copper pour, lingering head, sweet rye malt taste, interesting flavor blend with earthy, rye, and even chocolate notes. Mild bitterness. 6/3/7/4/13

Draught@SBWF2009. Amber colour, small head. Aroma is grassyness, caramel malts and also quite bready notes. Flavour is quite much the same in a good balance. Actually quite European to it’s tastes.

(Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival, 19 Sep 2009) Amber colour with brief, frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of bread, toffee and dried fruit. Malty, fruity taste with ryemeal bread, dried fruit, apricots and a spicy finish with a moderate bitterness. Medium body, fairly sweet. A decent märzen with a spicy rye character.

Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival. Clear pale amber, small head. Bready nose. Sweetish with fairly clean mouthfeel. Dough, light banana and some caramel. Low hop rate and bitterness. Too clean mouthfeel to attain full drinkability, but the rye components are interesting.
