CBC and our fellow islanders at Maui Brewing Co. are bridging the distance from Hawaii to the mainland with big flavor, camaraderie and generosity. This Centennial, Chinook and Nugget-stoked IPA, made floral with the addition of hibiscus flower, is the first of an annual series of collaborative beers benefiting local charities. This time around, a donation will be made to “Beer For Boobs”, a Susan G. Komen 3-Day team formed by San Diego company White Labs, who contributed the yeast for this brew. No matter which side of the Pacific you’re on, there’s no better reason to “Drink Pink!”

On tap at Craft & Draft, Amsterdam. At first I thought this was infected with Brett, but the bartender assured me it was the hibiscus. Hmmm, I’m not sure, as it wasn’t very floral, just funky and slightly fruity. Flavour was moderate bitter. Not your typical IPA. I still think this was infected. Any way, I liked it a lot.

On tap at Craft & Draft. Hazy pinkish orange colour, white head. Aroma is light hoppy, light grainy, light tartness. Favour is light sweet, light tart, light fruity, some raspberry, light hoppy bitter finish, lemons. Light bodied. Grew on me, but not particularly great.

Pink color, big hibiscus note though out that is a bit overwhelming. Refreshingly light, which works better.

22 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 9/4/2014. Pours slightly hazy reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, berries, pine, herbal, grass, flowers, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops, hibiscus spicing, and moderate malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, berries, pine, herbal, grass, flowers, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapfruit, lemon/orange zest, pineapple, berries, pine, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, balance, and robustness of citrus/pine hops, hibiscus spicing, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.9%. Overall this is a very nice hibiscus spiced IPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops, hibiscus spicing, and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
