Draft courtesy of the Churchkey crew, thanks! Cloudy golden brown color, decent lacing. Shocking pine aroma, a pleasant surprise when I was expecting a barleywine. Taste is bittersweet. Nice variation on a theme.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 11/23/11, Rating # 1983, it was a good year
Aroma: The nose is floral and grassy hops with some caramel, wood, and a hint of booze
Appearance: This one pours a dark reddish-orange color with an off-white head and light lace
Flavor: The taste is balanced between sweet caramel malts and some resiny and floral hops
Palate: The body is medium (plus), with an oily and sticky feel, slight warmth, and a long, dry finish
Overall Impression: Avery makes a very solid American style (read hoppy) Barleywine. I've always enjoyed this one. It drinks nicely, and has a solid hop presence. Like I said, this one is always enjoyable.

Bottle. Copper with a creamy light beige head. Aroma of rich toffee, dough, pine. Only slightly syrupy, alcohol is there but well integrated. Taste is very sweet with toffee, sherry and raisins, soft licorice then soapy pine bitterness. The amount of apparent bitterness is nice but erk! those hop flavours don’t work at all for me in this sort of thing and there’s a plain sugary sweetness on top of the quite nice oxidised notes. [edit] The rest crazily cold (8C) the next night. Less soap, sweetness is less sugary but very plainer overall. Not my sort of thing

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 08/18/2011. Dark amber pour with a medium frothy off-white head that diminishes gradually to a dense film. Small patches of lace. Aroma of malt, fruit, hops and caramel. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit and earthy hops. The finish is boozy and chewy with a malty aftertaste. Good beer all around.

cloudy red amber, smooth white head. aroma is quite hoppy, loads of malts, stale hops good bw. flavor is malty, stale hoppy, caramelly, boozy strong in a nice way.

On tap at Avery. Filtered amber-brown. Thin, steady, oily beige head. A unique and well done take on a Barleywine. Clean and smooth body, with a massive hop backbone. Big and bold, this is pretty phenomenal. Ive had it multiple times before in the bottle, but the fresh, zesty hops come out on tap. Rich caramel malt tones. World Class. Great beer.

My favorite fresh Barleywine to crack open. Hoppy as all get out, but smooth and coupled with a Cinnabon soul, this big-ass beer serves as a dual malt/hop-bomb. The hops are citric, but slathered in brown sugar cookie malt heaven, pun possibly intended, and their bitterness serves as a needed balance to the liquor finish. Any bonuses that might be gained by aging this bottle will be offset by the bountiful fresh citric hop goodness that accompanies fresh Hog Heaven. (9/08)

Bottle: Pours a hazy caramel color with a finger of creamy khaki head. Luscious aroma of sweet caramel malt, citrus, pine, and a slight bit of tea. Taste is hop forward with citrus, pine, and florals. Has a nice herbal, earthy element that I’d associate mostly with iced tea. Blends well with the malty background. More please.

22 oz bomber courtesy of fancypantsbeer. Pour is a slight haze darker copper with a nice two inch off white head. Nice coating lacing. Aroma is resinous sweet mild honey, along with a woody caramel maltiness. Nice bit of spice earthiness in there as well. Taste is quite big on both resinous earthy and floral honey hops and the the toasty caramel sweet maltiness. Despite the size and weight of the flavors, still nicely balanced. After taste is warming, but not sharp alcohol. Palate is medium to heavy bodied, lower carnonation and a mineral dry finish. Overall a great example of a nig hop american barley wine. Thanks for giving me the bottle John.
