Yes, this is the beer you've heard so much about!

Brewed with a ridiculous amount of barley, World Wide Stout is dark, roasty and complex. This Ageable Ale clocks in at 15-20% ABV and has a depth more in line with a fine port than with a can of cheap, mass-marketed beer.

World Wide debuted in the winter of 1999, and the staying power of this brew is undeniable. Like Fort and 120 Minute IPA, World Wide Stout only gets better with age (more on aging beers here). After some time in your beer cellar, the heat of the booze fades into the background and the port notes and roastiness take over.

World Wide goes great with (or as!) dessert. Share one with someone you love.

Admin Note: This entry is for standard World Wide Stout that clocks in at 15% - 20% abv.

Draft / guest tap @ Willimantic Brewpub. 25 Jan, 2014. This was a vintage 2011 keg. 8 oz. pour for $9.00. Dark black, no light can penetrate this brew. Aroma is some deep roasted barley with a real vinous wine notes going on. Damn this taste is crazy. It’s like a Port wine/ stout hybrid. Flavors are rum soaked raisins, red grape skins, mixed with chocolate and burnt sugary molasses. The finish has more red wine notes with the alcohol still showing up with some warming after the swallow. It makes the throat and belly warm a second after the sip. The texture is lightly oily and again reminds me of wine. If I was to takes this blind I would have guessed some variety of Port wine. The stout aspects are very subtle and subdued. It took me sometime to finally get to sample this. I really liked it but I prefer my Imperial Stouts to be more like…. Well, Imperial stouts. If I want Port wine I will get one from Portugal or Spain.

0.355l bottle from 2007 shared with The Tasting Crew. Immediately i notice that it's quite clear and not as black as I would have imagined. Deep dark brown and it has a small almost bubbly brown top. Smells nice. I get soft chocolate, lots of port sweetness, dried dark fruits and sugar. Quite nice, not what I would call extreme but really nice. It has a just below average carbonation level and the mouthfeel is thick and oily. In the taste there is licorice, lots of burned sugars, some of that woody port found in the taste. It has lots and lots of flavor this! It's no archetypal stout this, but it has lots of flavor! I just had the 120 minute and did not notice the alcohol at all. I don't really notice it here either until it gives a really stingy warmness in the aftertaste. I really enjoyed this. 09.10.2013

Tap at the Blind Tiger’s VSK night, I decided I wanted to get a touch drunk so grabbed this beast to pound prior to leaving. This was 2005 vintage so curious how it would hold up. Overall the age seemed to tame this monster some what as it was smooth and round and not overly boozy tasting at all. You get mocha, raisins, molasses, honey, bitter dark chocolate, and malt.

Bottle - Vintage 2011 - Boozey, dark fruit, molasses and roasted malts. Almost like an ABT Quad. Jet maroon with a little beige head. Mind numbing booze, dark fruits and then some licorice and a long finish. Really big and really good.

09.10.2013, 0,35l bottle (2007) sampled @ BBGTC tasting:
Tiny brown bubbly shortlasting head. Aroma is neutral and boozy, oak, alcohol, burnt dark malts, licorice. Taste is sweet, raisins, harsh grass, citrus peel, oak, hay, alcohol, burnt caramel, licorice. Medium bitterness, dry mouthfeel. Very disappointing. This beer has nothing to do with an imperial stout, there is no roastiness at all making this an imperial stout. It’s more like a barleywine-ish something, being kind of fair enough.

12oz bottle (2009) pour to snifter. Seems more of a barleywine than an imperial stout. Big boozy port nose and taste. I didn’t get any complexity: straight sweet plum and aged port. I appreciated the uniqueness and enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as good as I expected with the beer’s reputation.

Pours dark and syrupy without much head or lacing. Aroma of booze, prune and dark fruits and roast malt. Texture is syrupy and oily. Low carbonation. Finishes sweet and slightly sour - tangy. Overpriced, and alcohol is a little excessive - makes this too sweet for my liking at least. Some coffee in aroma as well. Bottle.

Bottle at Akkurat, April 2013. (vintage 2009) Black with no head. Very nice aroma of dried fruit, licorice, soy, port wine and some notes of berries. The taste was excellent, heavy but still nicely drinkable. Notes of alcohol, dried fruit, soy, port wine and some very light notes of roasted malt. Also dark chocolate and sugar. A great one! Expensive (595 sek, around 93 USD) but worth the price. Would love to try this one again. Heavy but an excellent one to sip.
