Magic happened this year in Boulder, CO, when local music and local beer came together. In search of the perfectly drinkable, yet flavorful, festival beer, the Boulder Beer brewers and avid homebrewer Kyle Hollingsworth, Keyboardist of the String Cheese Incident, joined creative forces. Imagination and improvisation flowed freely, and Hoopla was born.

Hoopla Pale Ale is dry-hopped with generous amounts of Glacier hops for a fruity, floral hop aroma and flavor that will have your taste buds dancing! Its lively hop character is wonderfully balanced with a crisp, clean finish from the unique blend of US and German grains, making Hoopla the perfect companion to festival season.

“We wanted to make a beer that was hoppy, but still appetizing to non-hop-drinkers and drinkable on hot days at summertime festivals,” Kyle explains about the recipe.

From notes. Nitro tap at Hangar. Pretty solid offering from Boulder. Maybe I’m just not used to the nitro, but it seemed really thin on the palate. Light floral hops and some cereal grains. Very drinkable, but not really that special.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a bright orange-amber color with a large foamy orange-white head that lingered and left no lacing. The aroma was dryish and tart with notes of Windex and grapefruit. The flavor was dry, bitter and tart with notes of Windex, Pez, chalk and rough grapefruit, lemon and perfume. Long bitter and dry finish of grapefruit and perfume. Medium body. Eh.

Can - medium orange pour with some haze to it - two finger head that lingers for a bit, but sinks to a moderate lace - I suppose I was only a matter of time before a hippie brewery collaborated with a hippie jam band - much like jam band music, sadly, this beer is directionless and only comes together in enjoyable ways at certain times - in this case the enjoyable bit is the spicy and herbal hop kick at the end - before that we have husky malt and a dense, doughy character that is muddy/unclean - the hops try to cut through this at the end, but never quite wash away the mess - so, again, much like a 20 minute jam band song, you are left wondering why you put up with all that crappy noodling around for what was really only a mildly enjoyable pay off at the end - meh.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 8/6/12

Aroma: The nose has some floral hops, bread, spice, yeast notes, and some caramel
Appearance: Pours a clear orange-light amber color with a small white head and some heavy lace
Flavor: The taste is balanced, light-medium sweet and light-medium bitter, similar to the nose
Palate: The body is light-medium, it has a fairly soft carbonation, a smooth feel, and a lightly dry finish
Overall Impression: I enjoyed this beer, but I didn't love this one. It wasn't missing anything that I could really put my finger on, but it also didn't really stand-out in any major way. It has a heck of a nice looking pour that really laces up the glass. It was a very solid beer with a nice drinkability, and it is quite sessionable as well.

Bomber from Nugget Market in Woodland, CA. Pours hazy copper with a 4 finger creamy/frothy head. This is floral over roast caramel. I’m thinking more ESB than APA. Almost medium body. Flavor is mild roast malt with a pretty much floral hop overtone. Might be a bit hoppy for our friends Over The Pond, but I’m still thinking ESB. Beautiful presentation and florally hoppy finish. Very nice.

Clear copper and light amber coloured body with a nice sized, rather soapy off-white head. Aroma of light grassy and herbal hops with a bit of a grapefruit smell, some light malt and a touch of honey. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and herbal hops with a bit of an english bite, some light malt backbone with a subdued nutty and caramel flavour near the end. Aftertaste is a bit nutty, a bit herbal and a strong assertive grass hop character. Overall, an okay beer - not great, but not bad at all, a bit light on the hops, but about right for an APA. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 09-October-2011 for US$4.99 sampled at home in Washington on 20-November-2011.

22oz bottle. Orange-tan, slight chill haze, thin off-white head. An interesting APA, chock full of earthiness. Cleanish malt backbone, syrupy hop action. Kind of teetering on offness, not bad per se, but not exactly a stellar example of the style. No shortage of hop character, just an odd earthy orange butterscotch tone which compromises the whole product. Maybe just hasn’t aged well, as it is within days of the best by date. Sweet, hop laced blonde toffee. No shortage or quality ingedients, just a sub par beer.

Pours gold into a Sam glass. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes leaving scant spiders. Resin and pine aromas. Thin with dark caramel and resin from front to back. Lasting grapefruit-tinged finish.

22oz bottle-pours a big tight off white head and copper color. Aroma is tropical fruit, medium malt-caramel. Taste is pine/metallic hops bite-tropical fruit, secondary medium malt-caramel. Cooler is better than warmer.
