In craft beer, there are almost as many bad rye puns as there are bad hop puns; Smuttynose is happy to spare you from more of either. Instead, we’ll tell you about our new Big Beer, Rhye IPA. We brewed it because we like drinking hoppy American-style beers and we wanted a chance to brew with rye. The rest, as they say, is history. The result is a 7% hoppy IPA, with rye spiciness and big hop character. This beer will really get under your armor…
The image on the Rhye IPA label is a famous drawing of an Indian rhinoceros by 16th century German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer. Dürer had never seen the creature before and created the drawing based on one description and a crudely scribbled sketch.

Bottle (from Systembolaget, Umeå). Amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is fruity, floral, some rye, mild bready notes as well. Flavour is floral, wooden, some mild rye and toasted notes along with a slight alcoholic sweetness to it.

Thanks... was it Matija? Anyway, murky amber body. Malty, sweet aroma, light apples? honey... wha? Creamy taste, slightly herbal, pleasant bitterness, but more malty than hoppy. Yeah, past its prime too, but OK enough in a way.

This was poured into a nonic pint glass.
The appearance was a hazy burnt golden orange color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light lacing sliding into the beer.
The smell had a sweet rye malt with a light citrus aspect backing it up nicely.
The taste took the sweet and let in a light spice in the balance and still let in a delicate citrus. All blended well into the aftertaste and left a quick semi-dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonated nicely, this one had a nice bitterness rolling across my tongue.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good AIPA with a nice rye spice to tie things up. I’d have again.

12 oz. can purchased at Beer Store, Nashua. Cloudy orange color with thin lasting head. Aroma shows light fruit, mild rye and toasted grain.
The flavor has a toasted grain and rye malt base. Pretty decent balance of spicy rye and bittering Hops with a substantial amount of malt and grain. Bitterness is lingering well after the sip without having any harshness. Good balance and a decent body.
