In craft beer, there are almost as many bad rye puns as there are bad hop puns; Smuttynose is happy to spare you from more of either. Instead, we’ll tell you about our new Big Beer, Rhye IPA. We brewed it because we like drinking hoppy American-style beers and we wanted a chance to brew with rye. The rest, as they say, is history. The result is a 7% hoppy IPA, with rye spiciness and big hop character. This beer will really get under your armor…
The image on the Rhye IPA label is a famous drawing of an Indian rhinoceros by 16th century German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer. Dürer had never seen the creature before and created the drawing based on one description and a crudely scribbled sketch.

1pt 6 fl oz bottle from Mikkeller webshop. Hazy orange amber colour, frothy white foam head leaving lacing and aroma of caramel, orange, slighty metallic, hoppy. Taste is malt caramel, grain, with orange & grapefuity citrus, woody pine, peppery and earthy bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft to carbonation, dry woody earthy bitter finish. Nicely drinkable IPA.

Bottled 650ml. -from Svijet Piva Zagreb. Orange coloured, small to medium sized off-white head, fruity nose. Sweet malty, fruity and decent hoppy with notes of caramel and rye with pretty strong bitterness specially in the finish. Also mild alcoholic presence.

Bottled from Biernavigatie, 2013 version so at least 6 months old, large sample, served in a shaker. Pours a hazy golden to orange color with a big frothy off-white head, leaving some lacing. Aroma of grapefruit and a bit onion and garlic from both amarillo and simcoe, a bit soft though, slight grainy rye. It’s easy to recognize the ingredients actually, which is quite a good thing. All nicely balanced, although hoparoma would probably be more intense with a fresher example. Medium bitterness, slight caramelly sweetness, some grainy rye again. Medium carbonation, medium bodied from the rye. Nothing spectacular at the moment, but well balanced and decent craftsmanship. Nice.

650ml bottle, 7 % abv, served in a tulip shaped glass at Bishops Arms in Luleå. Clear amber coloured body, hazy last pour. Steady, bubbly off-white head. Mixed aroma of bread and citrus. Fresh fruit hoppy flavours with rye malt beneath. Mid-dry bitterness of citrus peels towards the ending. Fine bodied. Smooth on the swallow. Lovely IPA creation (kindly shared by djoeye, 25.05.2014).

Associated Supermarket, Bushwick bomber ($4): Pours light reddish with an off-white head. Aroma is citrus, rye, and grass. Taste is aggressively hoppy all throughout. Rye malt backbone gives this an interesting kick throughout. Very easy to drink, but very flavorful. My girlfriend and I destroyed two bombers in less than 30 minutes.
