The original Piraat beer, launched in 1988 as a kind of pale version of Gulden Draak Classic (with the same yeasts).

From the brewery's website:

Bottle 0,5ltr: Slightly cloudy amber coloured sweetbitter tasting brew, by the way this one is overall well balanced in everything.

Great classic top notch for the style. Strikes the balance between phenolic, bubblegum, dryness. Hellobier adventkal

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clearish gold to light amber with a full two fingers of off-white fluffy foam that lingers. Belgian yeast focused nose with clove, bubblegum and light peppery hops as it warms up. Boozy on the palate but it works with the white pepper, bubblegum and clove notes. Sweet bubblegum on the finish with lingering peppery hops. Underrated stuff.

Bottle in a mixed Belgian pack from Lidl, Wycombe. An attractive rich deep gold colour with a large, craggy off-white head. Sweet Belgian banana bread yeast up front with an odd hint of sourdough. Some lemon and then some herbs (rosemary) before booze and smoked ham come through. Just a hint of bitterness in the finish. Made me think of a Leffe with added booze and herbs. A little all over the place actually but I quite enjoyed it despite the slight sourness; it's been a while since I've had a proper strong Belgian brew. Looking forward to trying the other beers in the pack.
