Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.
Deze ‘Golden Ale’ heeft een stevige witte schuimkraag die uitnodigt om de geur van groene hop, gist en lichte fruittoetsen te ontdekken. Na een volle en verfrissende kruidige smaak verandert het pallet naar lichte citrus, sinaasappel en pompelmoes, ondersteund door de hop. De honingzachte afdronk laat een licht kruidige komijnsmaak uitlopen op een volle hopsmaak.

yellow body, big puffy head in a Belgian chalice. aroma is all hops, but not at an overbearing level. Taste is grassiness up front with a lot of hops and then suddenly some malt hints. Dry finish. Drinkable, but I found the flavour lacking.

Large bottle. Poured a hazy orange color with a fluffy, long lasting, large white head. Aroma was very complex. Hops, sweet malts, spices, and something I can’t quite place. My buddy described it as mint, and he’s not that far off - expected flavor to end up a bit more cloyingly then expected. This was pretty solid and certainly one to check out. Didn’t quite pair up with the particular food we were consuming, but alone it was good.

Bottle @ Home. Pours golden with a small lasting white head. Aroma of grass, piny hops, yeast and abit of caramel. Taste is nicely balanced with some hops, floral and pine, honey and fruit. Medium body, lively but sft carbonation, long bitter dry finish. Nice. 101120

Bottle at the Governors Island BrewFest. Pours a slightly hazy orange-gold with a filmy white head. Aroma holds a nice blend of fruits and hops. Flavor is lightly sweet with a prominent bitterness. Light bodied with average carbonation. Finishes fairly bitter and refreshing. Not bad.

Pours a little cloudy blond beer with a very fine laced head. Smell is hoppy and a little sweet touch. A pleasing round and full mouthfeeling. Taste is a little sweet (alcohol?) at first, then spiced and bitter hops. Aftertaste is very dry with spices.

Shared this one with S8n as it came in a big 750ml wine-looking bottle. Sampled at Auberge Douceurs Belges in Quebec City as our first one, September 2005. Poured a hazy orange colour with many sediments floating around. Beautiful white fizzy head with good retention and lacing. Very hoppy aroma with some Belgian yeast, some earth and a tad of sourness. Slightly earthy mouthfeel. The taste started off hoppy, then bitterness kicked in and lingered in the aftertaste. Notes of apples and other light fruits are also found. Quite smoother after first sip. A pleasant mango jus-looking strong Belgian ale for those who crave hop.

250ml bottle. Dark orange with floating bits. Light tan head. Zesty lemon/ Moroccan preserved lemon aroma with some cloves. Taste has caramel and orange sweetness with modest earth/ spice bitterness. Finish is slightly spicy with some astringency. Not a lot of character nor all that much hops.

Very good Belgian IPA, but it has strong style competition. The beer pours a bright hazy gold with an excellent, puffy white head that leaves good lacing. The nose is a very sweet aroma of candied lemons and subtle earthy Belgian yeast. While there is a strong hop presence in the beer, it’s not the hoppiest BIPA out there. The malt contributes a flavor of wildflower honey. The hops are grassy, lemony and floral. It’s an interesting flavor profile, but the beer doesn’t quite grab me like some BIPAs. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, and it’s a very easy beer to drink. I would love to have access to this stuff for cheaper.

250 ml bottle. Dark golden body with a medium white head. Aroma is mild malty and rather fruity with some perfumed/spicy hop notes. Flavor is light malty, some caramel, rather fruity, a bit tea and a moderate grassy hop profile. Not particularly complex or hoppy, but more bitter than most Belgium beer. Nice and refreshing, alcohol very well hidden.
