Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.
Deze ‘Golden Ale’ heeft een stevige witte schuimkraag die uitnodigt om de geur van groene hop, gist en lichte fruittoetsen te ontdekken. Na een volle en verfrissende kruidige smaak verandert het pallet naar lichte citrus, sinaasappel en pompelmoes, ondersteund door de hop. De honingzachte afdronk laat een licht kruidige komijnsmaak uitlopen op een volle hopsmaak.

Hazy golden with a white head. Aroma is fruity, yeasty and moderate hoppy - grass. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Dryish and bitter finish. 021210

Bottle from my recent Belgian haul. I’ve had this one many times from bottle/draught. A golden coloured pour with a decent white fluffy head. Good hoppy, yeasty aroma. bottle@bar: hazy, bright yellow, smells something grainy, hops, bit sweet, citrus, yeast, not that strong of a smell, the taste is that of a nice moderate, somewhat complex bitterness from the hops followed by sweet honey, yeast, hints of spices, citrus, something floral & grass, very spring-like, nice

Bottle that I got with the Deca Antiek Blond 5 for "free" as part of some promotion after buying some Leonidas chocolate in Ypres. Heh. Poured a misty amberish body with a small white head that went away at a medium pace. Grainy malty nose, typical "Belgium" spicy fare, only softer an slightly acidic. A fine, full malty background, salty (that’s what I wrote O.o) hops in front, light notes of lemon and pine. Ok Belgian ale, with a nice little hopiness.

(Draught at One Pint Pub, Helsinki, 20110325) The beer poured golden and clear. Its head was white and quite large. Aroma was really fruity and it also contained clear Belgian style yeast scent. Palate was medium bodied with quite high carbonation. Flavours were fruitiness, hops, sweetness, malts, bitterness and mildly honey. Aftertaste was a little bit sweet and quite bitter. Not a bad beer. Very easy to drink and also easy to forget.

New Beer Distro 11.2 ox ($3.75): Pours a copper color with an off-white head. Aroma is mostly of fruity things, but there are some light hops involved. Definitely not a hoppy beer by American standards, but the slightly bitter hops are commingled with the sweet fruity flavors present. There are also a few yeast notes. Well-balanced and is very drinkable, like another person said, you can drink dozens of these.

[3/6/11] Draught at ZBF 2011. Clear golden. Yeast, fruit esters and some hops in the aroma. Flavor starts sweetish and fruity and quickly turns moderately bitter with some hops. Medium-bodied.

Pours clear amber with a large head and some lacing.Nose shows huge doughy Belgian yeast and accompanying spicy phenols. Pretty bold, very Belgian.Similar flavours, but a lot sweeter (candi sugar?) and with some added apples and pears. Alcohol is noticeable.Carbonation is too high.

yellow body, big puffy head in a Belgian chalice. aroma is all hops, but not at an overbearing level. Taste is grassiness up front with a lot of hops and then suddenly some malt hints. Dry finish. Drinkable, but I found the flavour lacking.
