Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.
Deze ‘Golden Ale’ heeft een stevige witte schuimkraag die uitnodigt om de geur van groene hop, gist en lichte fruittoetsen te ontdekken. Na een volle en verfrissende kruidige smaak verandert het pallet naar lichte citrus, sinaasappel en pompelmoes, ondersteund door de hop. De honingzachte afdronk laat een licht kruidige komijnsmaak uitlopen op een volle hopsmaak.

herbs, citrus, chocolate, hay, bread, caramel, cooked vegetables, banana, cooked vegetables, alcohol, orange, frothy, tan foam, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, medium sourness, medium body, soft carbonation. Great Belgian Hop Beer.

Bottle from Barley wine in Copenhagen. Clear straw colour but the yeast in the bottle makes it a bit cloudy. I think you should pour it all in to get the bitterness from the yeast to balance the sweetness. Big belgian yeast aroma, pared with ripe pears and apples. Tha taste is yeasty, medium sweet with apples, pears, wheat bread. A little subtle hoppyness together with the yeast brings a bitterness in the end. Well balanced, highdrinkability and really good!

Pale golden colour, decent white head. Aroma of malts and spicy yeast with Belgian hops coming through. Flavour malty, slightly bitter. Pronounced yeast. Finish bit hoppy. Quite OK.

Bottle at Cafe Buitenlust, Oirschot. Slightly hazy orange colored beer. Smell fruit, slightly hops and yeast. Nice taste of hops and lightly sweet. Nice carbo and medium body.

Cloudy, brown-yellow beer atih a medium and blond head. Aroma is fruitfull and fresh, oranges, some yeast, spicys and sour orange peels. Taste is also slightly fruitfull, yeast, medium spicyness and peppers. Medium bodied, quite smooth to drink, pleasant. This beer based on more to spicyness than fruitness, still both elements are greatly balanced. Pleasant, complex, blond belgian ale, I enjoyed this beer.

25cl bottle. BB 03/12. Poured hazy orange/brown color with a thin head. Aroma has mostly green apples and some yeast. Acetylaldehyde? Flavor is not off, but the apples still strongly there, along with some floral notes and yeast. Not much alcohol present, also no sweetness. Nonetheless, quite drinkable but I don´t think this beer should taste like this. Also quite thin body.

Quite a nice honey beer. When you drink this you shouldn’t be tasting it too much. When you taste it really well it’s nothing special. When you just drink it it’s very nice. Easy to drink, not to sweet. Different from other beers. Don’t like the colour on this one.

12/03 0.33 l bottle courtesy of Marko, thanks for sharing! It poured slightly hazy golden body with medium sized head. Fine belgian yeast aroma with little bit of sourish hops, may be the apples. Flavor was biscuit sweetish malty nicely rounded with orange and generally citrus hops, besides some standard spices like cloves and touch of pepper. Medium to full in body. Refreshing and crisp finish pronounces the hops mostly. Not so typical but pleasing and fine enough.

Dorée, col blanc épais. Arôme est houblonné avec note de levure, un nez qui est une bonne surprise par ce côté vraiment fleuri / levure qui met en avant toute la saveur du houblon. Ceci se retrouve en bouche avec un palais soyeux et épais de houblon qui reste centré sur le citron sans pour cela être trop amer avec ce petit côté houblon fleuri allemand. Reste mi-sèche en bouche avec un malt légèrement en retrait.

what is that aroma/flavor of most belgian strong ales? almost vinegary? i cant quite put my finger on it, but theres some funk in the flavor of most belgian ales that makes my stomach burn. typical in everyway, nothing special here.
