Hommelbier from Poperinge was brewed for the first time in 1981, for the triennial hop festival in the village. Hommel is local dialect for hops, and was the inspiration for the name of this tribute to Poperinge’s most famous export product. Since then, Poperinge’s Hommelbier has earned quite a reputation for itself with beer fans around the world, for its unique style, brewed with 100% hops from Poperinge.

Pours from the bottle hazy dark gold with a big fluffy white head that reminded me of a Duvel pour. Aroma is yeasty, sweet, with a hint of spice. Taste is dry, a bit bitter, with a long multilayered finish at which the depth of taste in this beer really becomes apparent. Honey, green apple, bubble gum, and a strong yeasty bread undertone are all present. Overlying it all is a gently candy sweetness that is all the more interesting given the lack of sugar as an ingredient. Medium bodied, well carbonated, and the alcohol is completely hidden. Really very good stuff!

0.75l bottle. Slightly hazy orange body, huge white head. Aroma of caramel, bread, apricot, grass, orange zest and even some coriander. Taste of bread, orange zest, honey and coriander with grassy and floral hops. Very balanced brew. Very nice. Especially considering its price.

25cl Bottle at home from Beer Hawk. Mostly clear golden straw coloured pour with a lasting off white froth that lasts. Aroma is nice saison yeast, sweet, sweaty hay, clove phenols. Flavour is composed of light cereal grains wheat, straw, belgian yeast, phenol, little spicy peppercorn, hay. Palate is medium light, frothy, slightly sweet. Pretty good.

Finally trying this beer after all this time. Light golden, funky nose is grains and spicy hops. Flavors has bubblegum phenols and mild alcohol sweetness show through, with spicy noble hops behind that and a medium bitter finish. Really quite nice combo of sweet belgian traits and hops, no clove notes.
