Belgian Style Dubbel
The story of New Belgium begins with an abbey: Not only were Belgium’s monastic beers the inspiration behind our Colorado brewery, but Abbey, a Belgian-style dubbel, was one of the first beers we released way back in 1991. Since then, it’s become our most award-winning offering. This garnet brown hued Belgian-style dubbel is strong on character and rich in flavor. Seven malts, including caramel Munich and chocolate, and a definitive Belgian yeast, waft off sweet, spicy aromas. Rich tones of chocolate and dark caramel mix with nuanced dried cherries, burnt sugar and figs. Sweet and roasty upfront, followed by a slightly bitter finish, Abbey is a lovely representation of the monastic beers of Belgium. Sip Abbey, and sip New Belgium’s tradition.

Walnut coloured with thick head. Raisins and banana aroma. Sweet fruity taste. Perhaps a bit to sweet for my taste.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours clear deep amber with a rather small frothy beige head that leaves some sticky lacing and trace on the glass. Smell is sweet, fruity, malty, estery and phenolic with dark bread, marzipan, baked pears, hay, black pepper corns, biscuits, oatmeal cookies, orange zest, cloves and hints of alcohol. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly bitter, tiny sour, malty, fruity, spicy, estery and phenolic with sweet dark bread, baked pears, red apples, hay, dried pine needles, dried apricots, wood, marzipan, bitter almonds, orange zest and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is round, tiny tart, tiny dry and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, tiny bitter and slightly sour with dark bread, dates, baked pears, apple skins, hay, soil, wood, bitter almonds, orange zest and lemon zest. Solid beer but a bit complicated without being complex.

12oz bottle pours with a clear amber body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma is thick with coriander and a touch of black pepper as well as thick sweet prunes, dried cherries and figs. In the background there’s something there and it smells a bit like melanoidin malts. The taste is full up coriander spices where the spice spikes of flavor are filled in nicely by brown sugar as well as firm notes of prunes and fig like fruity ester notes. It gets just a touch peppery about midway before it slides into a mildly dry pleasing finish. Dandy stuff.
