Belgian Style Dubbel
The story of New Belgium begins with an abbey: Not only were Belgium’s monastic beers the inspiration behind our Colorado brewery, but Abbey, a Belgian-style dubbel, was one of the first beers we released way back in 1991. Since then, it’s become our most award-winning offering. This garnet brown hued Belgian-style dubbel is strong on character and rich in flavor. Seven malts, including caramel Munich and chocolate, and a definitive Belgian yeast, waft off sweet, spicy aromas. Rich tones of chocolate and dark caramel mix with nuanced dried cherries, burnt sugar and figs. Sweet and roasty upfront, followed by a slightly bitter finish, Abbey is a lovely representation of the monastic beers of Belgium. Sip Abbey, and sip New Belgium’s tradition.

A deep red beer with an orange head. The aroma is sweet yeasty and malty with slight notes of burnt malt. The flavor is sweet malty with quite a lot of caramel and yeast, combined with lighter spicy notes. The alcohol burns slightly in the throat, and mixes with a dry spicy end.

Not near as heavy and malty as other dubbels I’ve tasted, but this is still an enjoyable beer. So deduct style points, but add drinkability points. Large off-white, frothy head atop a clear, dark mahogany sparkling body. Sweet malts dominate the aroma. Caramel, ripe fruit, orange, coriander and dough come forward in an interesting balance of smells. The flavor evokes banana, overripe plum, clove, sugar. Lively carbonation and a slick mouthfeel. Medium body. Moderately bitter in the finish with a light acidity. Warming alcohol.

Bottle: Poured a darker than expected brown/amber color with a nice head. Aroma is yeast and fruit, very true to the style. Taste is a well balanced fruity, nutty, malty, and spicey blend. Complex, yet smooth.

Bottle pours a clear dep mahogany with a nice thick creamy light tan head. Aroma is fruity and belgian, and with soft warm bready notes as well. Flavor is of lightly toasted malts, the yeasty flavors that the Belgians all seem to have and the malts were kind of biscuity. Similar to NBs Fat Tire. Interesting and another example of this style that makes me like it more.

Rerated and significantly downgraded 7/27/16 +++. Sampled on draft this beer poured a medium ruby-brown color with a large tan head. The aroma is sweet and yeasty with ripe fruits and molasses. The flavor is roasty with strong ripe fruits, medicine, tobacco and moderate bitterness and astringency. There is a mild yeasty note and some light sour tanginess in the finish. Not.as good as it used to be.

Medium amber in color, with moderate head of large bubbles - full aroma of yeast, clove, banana, nutmeg, earthy tones - lively, mouth-tingling carbonation - grainy malt character - light character with some odd notes of vegetables I can’t place - background hints of spices (mostly cinnamon) - subtle tartness, slight hops way in the back - very dry, not as sweet as I expect from the style - overall not too bad - thanks to Crosling for the sample.

Pour is a deep red with a nice sized white head. Aroma is fruity and spicey. Smell like Christmas! Flavor is excellent. Lots of yeasty and malty goodness. Lots of fruityness in this brew as well. Banana comes to mind. Over probably the best "Belgian" I have had that did not come from Belgium.

Bottle. Brownish beer with a good beige head. Understated maly sweetness, spice, and bubblegum in the aroma. Nice rich malt with banana and spice and yeast in the flavor. Wish there was just a little more richness to it. Fruit (grape and plum) with a bit of earthiness. Complex, but just lacking a bit to put it at the next level.

Bottled. Lovely beer, and a lovely bottle, too. Pours a very big cream colored head that slowly settles into a coppry body. Smell has enough Belgian sugar for everyone. The usual Belgian yeast esters of coriander, and a slight hint of banana toward the finish. There’s also a hint of horseblanket that becomes apparent the further down the glass you go.
