The Commodore came out of our search for a medium-bodied American Stout. The recipe began at our R&D pilot brewery, but quickly became a favorite of our crew. Strong flavors of roast coffee and bittersweet chocolate balance with light citrusy hop aromas, highlighted by a crisp, bitter finish. Draft. Chocolate malt, dry hay, and ash aroma. Black with giant head. Moderately sweet chocolate malt and moderately bitter dry hay/ash flavor. Good body. Solid.

This stout poured a deep black colour with a huge, creamy brown head. Nice lacing with scents of coffee, cocoa and vanilla. First swig was very bold with flavours of coffee most prominent. Mouthfeel is a little thin and lacking the creaminess I was expecting but still delicious none the less. Finish is nice and burnt with coffee and a very light vanilla flavour in there somewhere in the palate.

Sample while checking out the expo at HomeBrewCon. Deep brown color with a decent off white head. Roasty light chocolate and caramel with a faint earthy hop to counter. Nice stout.

(Bottle, 0.355 l, at Tommyknocker Helsinki, 20160601) The beer poured black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had coffee, dark chocolate and burnt malts. Palate was full bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, dark chocolate, ash, hops and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. A solid stout.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a black color with a medium sized fluffy dark brown head that left minimal lacing. The aroma was floral hops, cocoa, vanilla, coffee, anise and roasty malts. The flavor was roasty and woody with notes of bitter coffee and floral hops. Long finish. Medium body. Meh.

Bottle, thanks Tom, bubbly tan brown head, opaque black color, mellow roasted coffee aroma with toasted bread and cocoa, dark chocolate and charcoal flavor, quite intense, hints of dirt, mellow noticeable bitterness, light to medium bodied. Really enjoyable and easy to drink.

Black color with light brown cream head. Mild aroma of roasted malt and roasted nuts. Roasted malt flavor, soft mouthfeel, good body strength with dry mouthfeel; a bit too much alcohol.

Bot, finally a plain ol’ stout, or so I’m led to I think. Beautiful pour, so dark and smooth looking. However, in taste this is more like a black IPA from the start. Is it american because it has the hops of a mouth coating bitter chewing on old hardened pine tree turpentine IPA sap!? So dark so bitterly strong. Same with finish, nowhere near a real plain old civilized stout. Impressive, yet not impressed.

Ballast Point The Commodore 6.5% Nice pitch black with a thick tan head of foam. The nose is soft roasty chocolate. Fairly full bodied with a velvety mouthfeel. The initial flavor is chocolate but then it becomes nutty and roasty but in a nicely balanced way. Good stuff. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at the Temecula location. It pours a dark brown color with a light tan head. The aroma has lots of toasted bread with background notes of cocoa. A little floral/earthy hop. The flavor is killer. Nice notes of dark chocolate and subtle roasted malt. A little tobacco in the finish, but pretty smooth on the palate overall. Toasted. Very good.
