“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

In-store sample. March 20, 2013. Deep black color with a smooth, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bar nose. Rich, mellow chocolatey taste, now and again broken up by the usual stout roastiness. Not enough of a sample to make a good impression perhaps, and I’m just sitting on a bomber at home from 3-4 years ago. Rating: 8, 8, 7, 8, 7.5, Total 7.6.
Updated from cellared 2008 bottle. Full on Hershey's syrup chocolate nose. Solid black with a thin tan head, that leaves some legs as I swirl it. Taste is full on-chocolate liqueur. Still some roasty bitterness in the malt. Alcohol is on the side, clearly not from barrel aging.

Darl black pour, Dark mocha head. Aroma of milk choclate, toffee, brown sugar and a touch of coffee. The flavor was very very sweet, bit lactic notes of milky chocolate, amd a healthy dose of roasted malts. Finish was also very sweet with zero bitterness. Im not a fan of lactic flavors, so this was not my favorite, but it was still quite nice

Notes from March 2009 Bottle via New Beer. $7.49 I think. I usually don't. Shared with my up an coming beer aficionado uncle on his birthday. It pours a deep & darkly tanned brown into a few tiny cordial glasses he happened to have on hand. The head rescinded before it ever developed. Slick, motor oil surface. Smell is partially dominated by dark cocoa powder, alongside already coated bits of malt, the aromatic sweetness of marshmallow, & the earthiness of bitter dark chocolate. Taste was a combination of cocoa powder & a shot of chocolate vodka(Quite stiff). The flavor rolls off your tongue more as Tootsie Rolls then chocolate. Casualties within the blast radius were far secondary appearances of coffee grounds, a minuscule amount of toffee, & a slight grainy edge on the end to remind you it once was a beer. Strong but delicious. I'm not much of a fan of Southern Tier beers overall, but this is one that I do like. Feel was slightly tacky, quite chewy, slightly overcarbonated for the flavors, along with much untamed alcohol. Much better from tap. An awesome novelty nonetheless.

Bottle. A- Chocolate milk. A- Black color, black liquid, light brown head. T- Chocolate syrup, mild bitterness, slightly sweet. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- To say this is like a melted chocolate bar is an understatement. This is pure liquid chocolate. Unbelievable just how much chocolate is in there. A hint of bitterness keeps it from been too sweet. Outstanding stuff and one you have to try to actually appreciate just how chocolate like it is. Had this at almost 2 years old.

I got bottles from both nutbrown and orbitalrOx. Thanks Alan & Don!!
It pours a very dark brown with reddish hues and a 2 finger head of tannish foam.
The smell has great notes of milk chocolate, toffee, and a touch of coffee. The chocolate is ruling it here.
The taste is...so damn tasty! First and foremost, it's the chocolate. I'm tasting both sweet, which has the bigger role, and dark chocolate which, along with a small amount of coffee, give me some bitterness that helps prevent the over all flavour from becoming *too* sweet but hell, sweet is surely is and I'm loving it. There's plenty of toffee flavour here as well. Wow. I know that 1 bottle at a sitting will do it for me but the 22 ounces in that bottle are disappearing at an alarming rate. ;^)
The full mouthfeel and lowish carbonation is working its magic while the abv just gives me a little warming after the swallow. Great job in hiding the 11%, for sure.
Btw, the head retention is better than average and there's plenty of lacing hugging my glass.
Bottom line: This is, by far, the most chocolate-y brew I've ever tasted and is a real treat. If you have a chance to try some, do so!!

Bottle from Brewdog online, back In the day. I don’t usually do memory rates but this one I distinctly remember. A luminous thick dark black brown coloured pour with a lasting mid tan head. Aroma is big dark choc, coco, powdered chocolate, sweet chocolate notes. Big dessert beer. Would be good on vanilla ice cream. Flavour is composed of big rounded smooth roast dark choc, sweet chocolate malts. Hints of coconut, . Palate is milky, medium full bodied, moderate carbonation, creamy. Lovely dessert beer.
