The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle thanks to Jon! Pours a deep black with a small tan head that dissipates almost instantly. Sweet Hershey’s milk chocolate all over the nose with some light cacao in the background. Taste isn’t as sweet as the nose would lead you to believe. Lots of cacao with some light roasted notes and bitter baker’s chocolate notes. Dry finish that leaves a nice coating of cocoa all over the palate. Pours light black with coffee translucent rims and sparse latte foam on the edges. The nose shows milk chocolate with sweet chocolate notes. The palate is lightly carbonated and medium bodied. Mild chocolate sweetness with notes of slightly roasted malts, a dark chocolate bitterness and chocolate once again upon the linger.

On tap at Black Friday. Velvety smooth, aroma confirms beer namesake, flavor brings it all to fruition. Chocolate essence abounds, very smooth despite the high ABV. Silky black pour with spare beige head, but still leaves streaky lacing. Deserving of its reputation.

650ml bottle. Black color with small brown head that quickly disappears. Malty aroma, chocolate, chocolate, cocoa and chocolate. Sweet and light bitter taste. Medium oily body with flat carbonation.

Draught @ Albion. Opaque dark brown with small creamy tan head, chocolate aroma, low carbonation, sweetish milk chocolate taste with alcohol undertones, full body, long mocha finish. Very nicely chocolatey and strong.

22 Oz bottle pour split. Pours a near black color with no head. Sweet chocolate cocoa aroma with some vanilla. Flavor matchea, with a delicious milk chocolate finish. Very tasty. Really enjoyed this.
