“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Thx. to Benzai / Rene for this one. Breakfast beer, the morning after RBBWG 2013 – a nice way to start the day. Pours obligatory black with a firm mocha head. Smell is very sweet mocha, soft & sweet milk chocolate, chocolate mousse, chocolate milk. Taste is basically like those sweet chocolate drinks you can get in the Supermarket, sweet chocolate, pure chocolate milk, very thick, milky, chocolate, sweet, chocolate mouse, sweet chocolate sauce. Obviously tampered with as their other stuff but I don’t care because it so lovely. This basically tastes identically to Southern Tier Choklat only with a touch too much carb. I do prefer this because the taste is even fuller & succeed even more. Good morning.

Sampled from bottle @ RBBWG 2013. Pitch black color, medium sized light brown head. Smell and taste have a lot of malts, a huge amount of chocolate and moccha, lightly alcohol. Full body, thick syrupy texture, medium to full carbonation.

Shared from 22 oz bottle at home. Pours an opaque, almost black, with a tan head. Chocolate aroma. More chocolate and coffee flavor. Rich and complex. Nice.

Another great product from this brewery that I like, at the LCBO. Now at 11.2% ABV on the front of the bottle. Pours an almost black colour with hardly any red highlights. Great creamy mocha cap that stays up and gives out nice lace. A nice creamy coating tops the brew. More of a chocolate nose than coffee, like chocolate milk. Nice a creamy, silky, oily mouthfeel without any burn. A little warming comes in the taste, with the heavy alcohol, but still pretty easy-going with roasted malt, chocolate, nuts, mild bitterness from the hops and hints of vanilla. Wow !! What a great treat !

Smells like vanilla, coffee and chocalate. Well, uhh mokah. Like the creme brulee the aroma is spot on perfected. The palate ist super thick, however. A good, strong taste but nothing my tongue remebers after 30 seconds. Low carbonation, not much head or lacing.

Coffee beer showdown! I have me 4 coffee beers to compare and contrast tonight. Beer #4. Pours opaque black with a fairly small tan head that collapses after a minute or so. Aroma is deliciously chocalately, which smells very awesome, but I’m not getting any coffee here. Taste is rich chocolate and not much else. If there’s coffee in here, or "mokah," it’s the severely doctored-up sort, what my father-in-law calls candy coffee, filled with so much sweetener that the coffee is neglible. That doesn’t detract from the fact that this is some really tasty shit! This blows the other three coffee beers I rated tonight away by a long shot.

Opaque black pour with a thick tan head. Rich smooth chocolate, espresso aroma. Liquid chocolate coffee candy. Sip this one slowly for dessert.

Dessert in a glass. Tap at the Stags Head Southern Tier night. Pours jet black with brown lacing and nose full of lush chocolate. tastes of milk chocolate or maybe chocolate cake. you also get caramel, coffee, vanilla, earth and then even more chocolate. Its quite sweet and rich. One of those times where your glad your having sampler size as full glass would be tough and 750ml would put you in diabetic shock. but its delicious in short quantities.
