“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle. Pours a clear light brown with medium beige head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is stong chocolate and coffee. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet vanilla and chocolate with smooth roast finish. Easy to drink, really enjoyed this one.

Bottle at Sorbon, June 2012. Black with a small tan head. Really a lot of coffee in this one. Also chocolate and roasted malt. Nicely balanced and not too sweet.

Very dark brown beer. Light semi dry palate. Immediate and intense chocolate, dark and bittersweet. A light coffee liquer underneath. Blends together with some aniseed - licorice alcohol. Finishes smooth. Sumptuous treat.

75 cl bottle @ O’Hara’s Freehouse. Rated on 09.03.2010
Pitch black colour, small but long-lasting head. Aroma has lots of mocha coffee and chocolate – feels a lot loke ST Chocklat. Flavour is slightly sweet with mocha, chocolate some oat and hints of licorice. Nice.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of jcnielsen. Thanks bro! Deep brown appearance with a dark brown head. Very rich milk chocolate, somewhat roasty malty, Hershey’s bar, vanilla bean, a bit woody, espresso aroma. Rich milk chocolate bar, big vanilla bean, roasty, light coffee flavor. This baby smells and tastes like a Hershey’s bar. Way more of the coffee on the finish. Sweet as fuck but delicious. The 11% obviously did the trick for me as I dropped my phone in the beer afterwards. Cool story bro.

650 ml bottle @ Patricks. Dark brown, almost black body with a small beige head. Strong aroma of mocha, coffee, chocolate and cocoa. Very sweet, somehow bitter with lots of coffee, chocolate and cocoa flavor. No really alcohol flavor and feels actually balanced even to be this sweet. Fine body and a long aftertaste. A true dessert beer.
