The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Draught. Dark brown and looks a little flat. No head. Very chocolatey (syrupy) aroma is a bit like a chocolate cookie. Thick, full-bodied and quite syrupy. Quite a bit of alcohol and really not as much malt as you’d expect. Just a hint of coffee. I am not really looking for a beer that tastes like a Starbucks mocha and I don’t find this particularly well-made.

Bottle from bierkompas.de web shop. Almost black color with huge beige head. Aroma of coffee, pralines, vanilla, chocolate, hints of strawberries. Taste, pralines, caramel, roasted malt, light bitterness in background. Long pralines like sweet finish. I am not big fan of sweet beer, but this is really excellent.

Bottle at Gründerløkka Brygghus. Pours black with a tiny off-white head. Aroma of chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and alcohol. Less sweet than expected and well balanced with some bitterness. Some alcohol in the taste but mustly chocolate that finishes with a hint of coffee. A good dessert beer, but almost a bit heavy on the chocolate for my taste.

Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, cacao, caramel and alcohol. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long chocolate, coffee, cacao finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is flat.

Bottle, 22oz, at Patricks. It pours a dark, dark, brown body under a small, dark beige head. The aroma has a touch of alcohol, but it’s dark chocolate and coffee that dominates. Completely. Even more coffee after a while. It’s full-bodied and oil as well as warming on the palate, with lots of sweetness, coffee and chocolate. Really lasting finish, with a nice hoppy bitterness. A wonderful aroma in this one, the flavor isn’t half bad either. Might be challanging to drink a bottle alone. 111215

650ml bottle, 11% abv., carried home from Vinmonopolet Vika in Oslo and stored in my cellar for about 10 months. Enjoyed as a dessert and slow sipper on a Saturday eve. Pours a tan-coloured head with lots of dimples and with fair duration. Deep rosewood coloured body. Mocha chocolate throughout. Prominent aroma of chocolate fills the room. The taste is consistent with the smell where the chocolate part is added by a touch of coffee and brown vanilla. Dark bitter ending with warming alcohol down the swallow. Velvet and strong feeling in the mouth. Not that varied, but still a very pleasing sipper (Tromsø, 22.10.2011).

650 ml bottle, as Southern Tier Imperial Mokah, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 11.0%. Pitch black colour, moderate to low tan head. Lovely strong aroma of predominant chocolate, also notes of vanilla and coffee. The flavour has loads of dark chocolate, vanilla and strong coffee, with bitter hops (Columbus and Chinook) in the finish. Extremely powerful stuff.

On tap at Crunchy’s, East Lansing. Opaque brown-black body, thin to medium tan head. Nose of mocha. Strong body dominated by chocolate wafers or cocoa puffs, unidimensional but potent.

Keg at Craft Beer Co, Clerkenwell, London. A black coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Lovely rich chocolate, coffee aroma. Tastes of rich chocolate, some roasted coffee, surprisingly bitter, slightly sweet. This would be a good finish to a chocolate dessert. Decent stout.
