The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

A deep dark stout with a very thin mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, loads of chocolate, light fruity esters, alcohol warmth, still solid. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with dark fruits, chocolate powder, alcohol warmth, very nice and rich, still solid after 11 years. 2011 bottle.

7/28/2009 What a nice treat on a 90 degree summer day. I found this at the local could not pass it up. Pours a solid black with a thinnish tan head that dissipates quickly. Smells of chocolate syrup, alcohol, coffee, toffee, and caramel. Taste is of chocolate syrup, toffee, caramel. Lots of sweetness in this one. A little alcohol burn mid to end with a lingering alcohol and bitter hop finish. Thick body, chewy with a bit of a syrupy feel. Low carbonation. This is not my favorite from the black water series, but certainly drinkable. I would put this one in the same realm as the creme brulee to be enjoyed as a desert beer.

0.65l bottle @ Baran, Bergen. Pours a deep deep near black body with a thin and almost non-existing caramel head. Woody and thick chocolate aroma with notes of deep caramel and vanilla. Full-bodied, carbonation is medium+ and it has a oily to creamy texture. My god that's good. Caramel coffee-ice that a thing? If yes, this is it! Beautiful light chocolate burn in the finish and a mysterious coffee/woody/spicy - almost peppery finish and a longlasting sweet mocha aftertaste combined with that little alcohol sting makes this brew really nice.

From a 650ml bottle from Pick’s Liquors poured into a snifter. Pours a dark black with about a quarter inch of dark tan head that lingers. On the nose is a strong smell of chocolate with a hint of coffee. The taste is medium sweet and heavily bitter. The aftertaste starts like Nestle Quick and ends like strong black coffee. This beer is medium-thick with average carbonation. Overall, this is an A+ beer. Unique in flavor and aroma to all other stouts I’ve had. At 11% abv and $8.49 a bottle, this is a beer I will be purchasing again!

Black with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, hard roasted malt, coffee, vanilla and loads of dark chocolate. Flavor is very sweet and moderate bitter. This is chocolate all the way. Creamy texture. 280810

Medium brown head. Just barely translucent wine red body with strong carbonation. Syrupy cocoa/mocca aroma with earthy coffee notes. Dry-sweet roasty vanilla taste with coffee notes. Surprisingly little initial taste, however, more appears later. Mid-bodied. Oily hot and sharp mouthfeel. Dry chocolate cocoa coffee aftertaste with buttery vanilla and burntness notes. It’s lacking in depth, but not bad. (0.65l bottle, wine monopoly Vika, Oslo.)

Bottle at White Horse Parsons Green post GBBF. Vanilla choc coffee aroma. I liked the aroma. Some vanilla, choc and coffee. Decent-ish. I would like it in any other pub. Bit over carbonated. OK, not as good as the Bolvig side by side. Tasty though.

Bomber. Deep brown, approaching black, body. Thin, tan fizzy head. Aroma of rich caramel, dark chocolate, strong coffee, roasted malts, flowers and vanilla. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately bitter and moderately sweet. Medium body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Big taste of chocolate and coffee and big sweetness, too. Surprisingly, the beer didn’t get cloying, though 12 ounces was plenty. Despite the watery texture, the chocolate comes off as rich with just enough coffee bitterness to keep it in check. Nicely done.

bottle - Pours black with a small, lingering tan head. It smells of rich roast malt and chocolate. The flavor is similar and as expected has ample coffee character too. It’s a big, sweet stout that tastes exactly how it says it should. Well done.
