Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing that’s for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So let’s get the stories flowing and share a little ’Folklore’. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

Medium dark brown head. Opaque black body. Roasty earthy licorice aroma with banana and soy sauce notes. Sweet, and faintly dry, cocos and banana roasty taste with licorice notes. Mid-to-full body. Mild mouthfeel. Dryish banana and licorice aftertaste with roasty soy sauce notes. Some minerality at the end, as well as bubblegum notes throughout. Nice, harmonic, and full of flavour. Not exactly a session beer, but certainly drinkable. (0.355l bottle, from wine monopoly, Vika, Oslo.)

Bottle from Whole Foods Westlake, Seattle; bottled 10/08/13
Black color with medium sized brown head, not persistent. Aroma of roasted malt and breadcrust, with an impression of soap and cheese. The mouthfeel is lean, and quite smooth; the flavor is quite roasty, but not too ashy, with a touch of dark chocolate and liquorice, very light anise and chili peppers, a bit salty; the residual sugars are quite low, the bitterness reasonably high. Mild astringency in the final. Balanced overall.
Good beer, nothing more. An Imperial Stout like many others.

On tap at the Stillwater at Dig Bar. Foreign Stout. One of their rare dark beers, it’s brewed with the Rochefort yeast strain. It pours a dark brown with a rusty beige head. The aroma is plum, roasty chocolate with a bunch of umami meatiness. The mouthfeel is quite nice, silky smooth & full bodied. The taste is sharp, fruity, dark roasty, pitted fruits - cherry-like.

Bottle from BOTW. Brought this back for my mates, but they will all get it on tap next week, as will I, so I drank it. very fruity nose, grapes and cherries, light citrus. Maybe some chocolate, coffee, and licorice, but it’s light. Dull black with lace. Flavor is more stout-like; lots of dark chocolate, some coffee, roasted wood, fruits. Nice and interesting. Not a straight-forward stout, something spicy and Belgian. Good stuff, though. Body it a bit thin, but i dig it.

Bottle pour. Very dark with medium head. Aroma is multi-dimensional with some coffee and some sour fruit. Malty flavor with a quick change to chocolate, coffee, caramel, and dark fruit. Very roasted flavor to finish. I really enjoy this beer. Very complex. Delicious.

Deep dark brown coloured body, about 95% opaque with a thin, oily brown head. Aroma of deep roasted malt, earth, oatmeal, anise and a touch of caramel - strong. Medium to Slightly-Full-Bodied; Strong dry earthy flavour at first with a lot of oatmeal and roasted malt, some light cacao, a moderate amount of yeast notes and some light tastes of oysters. Aftertaste is slightly sweeter with caramel and toffee, but the very dry assertively bitter flavour doesn’t sit too well. Overall, a fairly one dimensional and rather uninspiring beer with not enough profile or complexity to be a good beer in any of the stout categories. This tastes more like a dry stout than anything else, but even that category wouldn’t make this beer good. I’m guessing the high ratings are from the label on the front. Take that off or replace it and you’d lose the lustre of this beer. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle after a hockey game in Arlington, Virignia on 19-March-2014 - Thanks Kevin!

12 ounce bottle - black pour with a fairly thick tan lace - nose of charred, bitter maltiness, raisin, dried cherries, smoke - there is also a moderate fusel alcohol presence reminiscent of model airplane glue which is pretty off-putting, which is a shame because the other notes are nice - medium body, with a lightly oily, mouth-coating texture - flavor lacks some depth - some bittersweet chocolate, anise, a touch of smoke, light tart cherry acidity on the tail end - there is a sharp mineral note near the end - finish is a bit high on the retro-nasal alcohol presence, but at least the flavor is mostly devoid fusel alcohol flavor - certainly one of the weakest offerings from this brewery - I wonder if the 750s produced at another facility are like this.

10/7/13 bottle (brewed at Two Roads), drunk on 1/21/14
Deep chestnut brown body has auburn tints on the edges, with a charred-beige colored head that very quickly recedes to a light smattering around the edges. High clarity, with no sediment left behind.
Prunes, raisins, roasted barley, vanilla, hickory and Belgian esters (bubblegum, light banana and vanilla) in the nose definitely seem pretty spot on for a Belgian stout. Some glue-like fusels are faintly noted at first. Medium strength of aroma with the esters and alcohol drowning out the maltiness.
Milk chocolate and roasted barley flavors lead things off, with some dry, astringent notes from the barley and lots of alcohol fusels. A bitter, perfumey alcohol note is felt in the back of the throat and lingers on the finish, while the maltiness, sweet at first, dosent seem to have much depth and succumbs to the heavy esters/fusels. Glue, cherries and prunes all linger on the finish, and the beer remains very dry with some tobacco and dark chocolate notes. There’s some good stuff goin on here, but it’s pretty scattered about and this pervasive alchol and heavy ester profile makes it quite difficult to drink. Maybe they let the fermentation temps go a little bit too high on this one? I don’t know, but it’s definitely problematic for the beer. The bottles have sat warm at Julios (where I bought them) but the other three I’ve had so far (IBU, Existent and Cellar Door) exhibited none of this, so it’s hard to imagine that’s the problem. Will certainly try again.
