For those of you who don’t know who “Scotty Karate” is. He is a local one man band who plays an amazing slurry of honky-tonk influenced, punk-country songs. (Check him out at www.scottykaratetime.com) A big bold musician deserves a big bold beer, that’s why Scotty and our Scotch Ale are a perfect tribute to one another. Scotty Karate is brewed with cherry wood smoked malt instead of the traditional peat smoked malt offering up warming notes of coffee, caramel and sweet caramelized brown sugar. Scotty finishes earthy giving this beer a character all it’s own, just like the man himself.

Keg at the brewdog Soho. A clear nutty brown coloured pour with a halo of beige head. Aroma is layered malts, toast and toffee, apple, some cinnamon spice,. Flavour is composed of medium sweet, brown sugars, biscuit, cinnamon, some bark, apple. Some hot alcohol. Palate is medium sweet, woody, lowish carbonation. Some alcohol bite.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass. Appearance is murky reddish-brown with tons of dark particulates, light sparkle, finger-width fizzy beige head with fair retention and trace lacing. Aroma is caramel, brown sugar, bread, fruit and alcohol. Taste is fruit, caramel, candied sugar, alcohol. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin, smooth, silky texture, mild alcohol warmth, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, hideous look and the alcohol is a little reminiscent of rubbing alcohol, but pretty strong aroma and flavor.

Rocky light beige head soon left a spotty cover on a reddish brown still body. Demerara, malt, syrup & candied fruit aroma. Medium bodied, full & creamy to the fore with a thinning clean back. Bitter stewed fruit, sweet stewed fruit, brown sugar, burnt paper & grape tastes with long tangy finish.

Bottle, from City Hops. Pours reddish dark brown with foamy beige head, sweet caramel aroma, high carbonation, sweetish roasted malt-caramel taste with woodsy bitterness seeping in at the end, thin body, long woodsy finish. A bit watery but enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours foggy chestnut brown. Small off-white well-lacing head. Rich aroma: caramel, nuts, toffee, fruit jam, sherry. Sweet but complex. Medium to full body. Still easy-drinking. Taste: rich malts, subtle fruit, bread, nuts, some hops. Everithing but sticky. Perfectly balanced. Delicious.
