The beer, designed once again by IRON MAIDEN vocalist and ale aficionado Bruce Dickinson along with Robinsons’ Head Brewer Martyn Weeks, takes its inspiration from a very early Robinsons recipe which was first brewed in the 1850’s; a time when porter style beer was becoming increasingly popular in Britain.
Bruce Dickinson explains: “I like tasting outside the box. Stouts and porters were virgin territory for me so I just went by feel. Martyn and I hope we have created a new take on a classic beer and one which I hope will tickle the taste buds of ale fans in a pleasantly unexpected way.”
At 6.8% in bottle or 5.8% ABV in cask, TROOPER Red ‘N’ Black is the strongest beer in the range to date.

Bottle from Rudat. Smooth and mild beginning. Nice Ale-body, mild with a great and and smooth caramelly aroma. Not too bitter, but nice roasted caramel, sessionable with depth, round and smooth, mild caramel without too much sweetness. Very nice with hints of nuts in the aftertaste.

Pours a dark copper-amber colour with a nice beige head, slightly creamy with good lace. Smells yeasty with some fruity notes, like apples, bananas. Some roasted malts in the back, which seems milder in the taste. More grassy hops and some caramel malt flavours. Some good bitterness, but not really one I would have again. Maybe a little too much yeast overall.

Bottle, 0.33l. Clear deep brown head with thin quickly diminishing light brown head and average sparkling appearance. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, grass and rubber. Taste starts light sweet and sour fruity, follows by roasted malt, caramel, licorice and grass, mouthfeel is dry and mild spicy, while finish is medium bitter. Medium body, oily texture and lively carbonation in palate. Grassy astringent porter, but would rather see it more creamy, although that wouldn’t fit into Eddie’s character...

(bottle, 33cl) Clear, ruby brown colour with a light-brown mid-sized foamy head. Earthy malty, mildly roasted aroma with notes of caramel, bread crusts, marzipan, hints of dark chocolate and subtle berry-fruity accents. Mildly sweet and slightly roasty bitter flavour, medium to light bodied with a smooth carbonation. Slightly earthy and roasted malty base with notes of caramel, dark cholate and a tinge of dark berries; dry-ish bitter-sweet finish with mildly roasted notes, caramel and warming alcoholic strength underneath. Pour is a almost black with plenty of red highlights. Aroma is a decent dark fruit with some treacle. Flavor is black licorice, some treacle and black strap molasses. This beer was all over the place. Not very porter like but this had a lot of adjunct flavor that was actually quite nice.
